Last week we reported that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS may be releasing Spring 2014 – according to a Nintendo of Germany representative. This rumour was immediately seen as a little far-fetched, with Nintendo Online reporting that sources had confirmed this indeed was a mistake.
Now, Sakurai has formally confirmed on Twitter that Super Smash Bros. will not be making the alluring Spring date, saying that this is simply misinformation. However, the game’s director said that it will be released at an unspecified later date in 2014, reconfirming what we already knew.

I'm not sure if this needed a separate topic, but I guess we could discuss this news here.

Sounds like the game will still be in development within the early months of 2014. Note how Sakurai says it "will not be making the alluring Spring date", suggesting that they may have been aiming for a Spring release, but didn't make it. He did reconfirm that 2014 is still the year the game comes out, so no early 2015 like others are suggesting.

I'm inclined to believe a Summer 2014 release is plausible, but we'll see what happens.

It really bothers me that there isn't a direct translation of the first tweet in the article. Does he say that it won't come out in the Spring for sure, or does he just say that the German rumor is false? The distinction is important.

I knew that had to be the case. Spring seemed too early for me.

I can see this game get released between Summer of 2014 to early 2015… but I am expecting a delay into early 2015.

Spring sounded both a bit too early, and a bit too good to be true. I'm not shocked by this one bit.

Honestly, the game seems more likely to come out somewhere between April or July, if we're lucky.

Google Translate sucks, but it appears Sakurai made two tweets. Here is the first, translated.

"There seems to be a new rumor "Smash Bros." is called out in the spring of next year something, but this is misinformation. De-moto is like Germany, but such as he is not even the fact that you speak.
It is common misinformation like that ... Well."

Here is the second, translated.

"And somewhere in the 2014 officially! I can not answer the question, but there is a place that incorporates in desperate every day."

So while it doesn't specifically (at least in this botched translation) say that it WON'T be out in Spring, the second tweet seems to give off the impression that it will be in 2014, but that there's no official release date yet.

if it was not going to be realsed in q1 it should not been announced at e3 and the site should not have started pictures. I mean how long can they expect us to maintain hype

"There is a place that incorporates in desperate every day" sounds oddly poetic. Almost like the beginning of a weird post-modern fairy tale.

This statement makes absolutely no sense. You do realize that Brawl was announced at E3 2006 and was intended for a December 2007 release, right? And that Kingdom Hearts 3 isn't even in development yet, yet was announced at this E3 as well? And did you not recall the backlash Nintendo received for only showcasing titles that would be released in either that year or next year before E3, which is what you seem to think they should have done this time?

The point of E3 is for developers and publishers to showcase the future of gaming. Smash is a major part of the Wii U's future and Nintendo, getting flack from no Smash at last year's E3, wasn't going to make the same mistake twice. So yes, it was the right decision and consequently allowed Nintendo a decisive victory at E3 this year.

it goes against nintendo's policy of not revealing titles that wont release soon

But Nintendo's own actions contradict your claim. Way back in January, they revealed Monolith Soft's X. And almost one year later, it STILL has no release date other than a vague 2014. Plus it doesn't even have a proper title yet! We also have Yarn Yoshi, which was previewed the one time and hasn't been seen since. Nintendo is simply doing what other companies are doing and what they should do: showing us sneak peeks of the future.

Well judging by past history, we have "Prepare to Brawl 2007", and a October release date set, and yet, Brawl launched from January to July of 2008.

I would take Sakurai's word with a grain of salt in that matter, especially since the actual smash brothers site sounds pessimistic towards a 2014 release date.

"Expected Release: 2014" from the main site doesn't exactly sound beaming with confidence.

On top of that, Melee was delayed once, Brawl was delayed twice. With 2 games forthcoming, we could expect up to 4 delays, or roughly the average amount of delays of a Telltale game. :rotfl:

Im gonna graduate and be a jobless bum before this game comes out >.<

Hard to say if this game will even surpass project m.
It already surpasses your lousy mod, and I'd be happy with a June/July release date

I played some of Project M 3.0 a few nights ago. It may not be a true Smash game, but it is FAR from lousy. In fact, I was very impressed. No crashing my Wii U at all.

Well, if you're going to be technical, then yes, June counts as spring until the 21st.

This would make the game be in 3 years of development incase it'd get stretched to Q1 of 2015. And most of the things that took away from Brawl's development time aren't here anymore.

I might see Summer release as most plausible, during that time E3 can drop us the hype bombs and then pull a(nimal crossing) new leaf on us with a release date few days after E3 itself. Or further away.

In anycase I just think that so much development time has been put to this game that is essentially being unburdened from the things that held it back during Brawl, so unless they're trying out something completely new with the multiplayer or 3DS-version becomes the new leech, I'd be appalled on why this game needs so much development time (as to potential 2 to 2.5 or even 3 years if the whole "Expected release date: 2014 turns out to be just pessimistic "expecting")

I'll be pretty happy if the release date is later, possibly Q3 or Q4 2014, that means they'll put more time into balancing characters. Regardless I'm planning to buy my Wii U in time for Mario Kart Wii U. 8)

They could pull a Triple Deluxe and announce a release date only about a month before it actually comes out so, if you want to be optimistic about a late spring/early summer release...

Unfortunate but not too surprising.

If it does get released in 2014 at all that'd still be cool though.

Disappointing, but this gives me more time to buy a Wii U, so all is well.

Glad its at least probably coming sometime within 2014 though. Don't want to have to wait too long.

Definitely summer or sometime in November are my guesses. Sad, but they're putting a lot into it at least. I was worried the roster would be small.
