Any effort made to make Demise a playable character would be better spent making Ganondorf an original moveset.
I mean cant you just make both, I always imagined ganon as a slow powerful dark magic user who uses his sword sparingly, and demise as a quicker but strong (not ganon strong) swordsman who used dark lightning attacks.

Is that really the right thing to do? The reason it didn't happen in Brawl, although at that point he is no longer a tacked on fluff character, could be because Sakurai did not want to bring substantial changes to a character's existing M.O.

I mean, I wouldn't mind either way, but I can understand both sides of the coin.
Difference being this time that Sakurai specifically said he wants to put more focus on updating old characters rather than just making more newcomers in SSB4.
For this reason I'm quietly optimistic about out favourite prince of darkness stepping up this time round.

Demise is slower and bulkier than Ganondorf.

The number 13?

Demise is slower and bulkier than Ganondorf.
In the actual game yes, but some reason they made him slow in smash bros so I kinda wanna do it this way.

Because TK is my favorite Angel Beats character, and this game is called "Lucky Chance", I'm participating. And I'll be picking the greatest number of all time: #4

How so? I find that Ghirahim becoming his true form, the dark "Master Sword" if you will, and resurrecting his master with his magical dance, to wield him in a monstrous transformation Final Smash like Giga Bowser, would be quite epic, fitting for a Final Smash.

Of course, these are opinions, and that is just what I envision to be the acme of what it could be. I am guessing though by how you word that you want Demise himself. If so you are quite the rare bird! And I do not say that to belittle you.

Back in the day, I'd be all over this kind of thread. But now I'm far too skeptical and open once the burdens of bias and entitlement were lifted from my heart.
Both would make great characters, its just demise is very important to the zelda series, thats why I want him included first and foremost (even though he is unfortunately not very popular).

Well, I wouldn't say "updating old characters" necessarily implies a revolutionary overhaul of some characters but hey who knows, it could happen. Honestly, if I had to absolutely bet one way or another, I doubt Ganondorf would receive any significant change, though some minor additions wouldn't be that surprising. This is because, if I am to try and envision Sakurai's perspective, he'd probably want what Ganondorf is to bare resemblance to what he once was so as to not alienate those who like or play him as is, and he probably doesn't view his own character as broken, as if he needs fixed (aside from buffing what's already there). But my "intuition" means basically nothing.

Yeah, at this point I wouldn't be surprised if Ganondorf stayed the way he was, I just have a problem with the fact that he was made a clone of Captain Falcon in the first place. All they had in common were similar bodies. With Mario and Luigi, Fox and his clones, Ness and Lucas, Link and Toon Link, Pikachu and Pichu, etc. I can understand the clone, but Sakurai thought Wario deserved better than being a Mario clone, and I think Ganondorf deserves better than being a clone of a character not even from his series. Truthfully I would've much preferred not getting Ganondorf in Melee if it meant we got an original Ganondorf in Brawl.

But as long as he continues to be luigified, and their playstyles continue to differ, it's not the biggest problem or anything, but Ganondorf could be so much more...

In this hypothetical situation where Sakurai has unlimited time, resources, and spots on the roster, yeah, it'd be possible to have both. In reality, if Sakurai were to add another original Zelda character, chances are it would get the majority of the attention, while the existing characters would likely only get minor updates, especially since they're all "functional" as they are. Yours is an idealistic situation, but not a likely one, not even considering Demise's actual chances.

Oh, I don't think you'd have anyone argue with you on that point. From a deserving standpoint, looking at the Zelda series or Nintendo series holistically, he wasn't done "justice" in the Melee pantheon. Not that I cannot misunderstand his fate. Honestly, even now, and particularly then, Ganondorf hasn't expressed much depth in terms of set potential. He hits hard and has dark magic. A similar fate that Captain Falcon had, just with fire instead (though of course he had less depth do to the type of game series he is in, but I digress).

Personally, like I mentioned what might be most likely, is he will be perhaps at most a bit more distinct to do him "justice" in the SSB4 pantheon but also remain faithful to his past appearances. This would also make the most people happy possible. A complete redesign, while fun, would be received with mixed reviews.

Well that would be a waste, you could do the same for several characters and several people would be sad.
I'd be happy with it.
He would be a clone anyway if they even bothered to give him his own slot.
A one time character like this certainly does not warrant taking the time and resources to create an entirely unique moveset.

It's a stretch syaing that he uses dark magic.
It's kind of like making Pikachu a Jigglypuff clone but each time you make a hit there is an electricity animation.
Just a big cop out to me.

I disagree about set potential. I mean Ganondorf has had a sword, a trident, magic, and numerous dark powers, ranged and non-ranged. Limiting him to, frankly, generic attacks, with dark effects thrown in, is almost a disservice to the character. Even though there are some that have grown attached to his moveset, it has received a lot of negative reception, and I think if any character would get a positive reaction to a redesign, it would be Ganondorf. Of course, like I said, I don't imagine a full redesign as something incredibly likely at this point, but I think if it did happen, it would be received fairly favourably. Especially since the last experience for many with Ganondorf in Smash was his Brawl incarnation...

I wouldnt mind the demise final smash, i would just rather have the armored form as his final smash giving him greater defense/power on top of the ability to use his two handed sword and create diamond barriers. Ive always liked the idea of him being able to change into a weapon at will via a taunt, which would give him the very distinct gimmick of being able to be used as a weapon by his tag team partner in those types of matches.

Thing is, it takes a huge amount of time and effort to create a unique character. I only expect around 8-12 new ones. Does a one hit wonder villain like Demise warrant that huge amount of time? and is he in the top 10 most deserving newcomers?
Not even close if you ask me. A costume change would be fair.

If hes interesting and unique why not? I still dont think the one shot rule people throw around is so sound, if a character is new and unique why should they be kept out if they arent recurring? The pool for this smash bros is much shallower this time around, so it couldnt hurt to bring in new potential and we have no idea if sakurai might want to do that either. And i dont support the thought of different beings as alt costumes, id rather them not slap that onto an existing character, but thats just me i suppose.

Ganondorf in Ocarina does the volley-ball attack, an energy beam attack, a giant punch attack, and can send waves of darkness, so I mean yeah he has set potential, but just not that much. His cloned set, aside from having no long-range attacks, and lacking the sword from the 2000 Zelda demo, while yes is a disservice (note that I don't disagree with you here N3ON ^^ ), I don't find it overtly offensive. Of course, between getting something original, and having gotten what he did, I'd take the former any time. I'd even personally be interested in that change happening even now, especially since he's appeared more. You may be right that people will overwhelmingly love the change, I might be a bit too used to being a bit reserved when it comes to speculating.

And Hylian, your idea might be better. Mine is just a bit more huge, so I felt inclined to want it. I could always get his silly dance in a taunt. I'd be happy with whatever.

Because there are popular and recurring ones that are also interesting and unique. We don't have as large a pool of notable characters as we used to, but we're still not scraping the bottom of the barrel for ones like Demise. Having potential really means very little in the whole scheme of things, as most characters have potential to be interesting and unique. And potential is really only one of the categories Sakurai looks at, with Demise not doing so hot on the other ones.

He may be interesting but he's not unique given that he plays almost exactly like the Ganondorf sword fight from Twilight princess.

I completely agree.
Although since Demise is in essence the same character as Ganondorf, I'd be okay with this one. Just like I'd be okay with a Mario/Dr Mario costume change.
Something like Sonic/Shadow or Sheik/Impa however I would reject as they are entirely different entities.

Then just don't make them exactly like alternate costumes. Sakurai is interested, with the 3DS version in mind, making the game with more customizing. That is the perfect excuse to input characters that can't make the cut for a slot on the roster but be able to make an appearance as an alteration of existing characters. The alternate character's shouldn't be wild (like going from Captain Falcon to Ganondorf  ), maybe going as far as Diddy to Dixie with it. They can provide a change-up in stats and moves, even altering some moves entirely.

Demise? I... uh... and...

...Are we getting this bored before E3?

I'm actually trying to think of something to discuss but even I've got nothing. Uh, top five characters are go?

Mine:
1. Masked Man/Claus
2. Isaac
3. Dillon
4. Paper Mario
5. Ridley

Will be happy even if only one appear. If all five appear, well ****, I've got new mains even if they suck.

No, I'm not offended by Ganondorf's portrayal or anything, I just think it's a waste of an important character. I suppose at this point the best course of action might be to sort of merge his existing moveset with an original one (like keeping the side special, as it's unique, but maybe changing the others) to appease those who like his current identity and those who want to see him diversified. Or it wouldn't work and it would just piss everyone off. In any case, I don't even expect that much to change for SSB4, I think at this point he's stuck with how he is (for the most part), but I'd love to see him get an original moveset above the inclusion of any other Zelda character not already playable. Just wishful thinking probably, but I think if he was changed, there would definitely be as much positive reception as there would be negative.

Thats true, and im not exactly saying demise should be the one they choose, id rather have ghirahim myself but i only brought it up since many say hes in the same boat. But as far as zelda characters go if we go by recurring all we are stuck with is toon zelda, tingle, and impa (i want impa though so id be fine with that). Zelda hasnt gotten any new characters since melee, and id really like to see something different rather than being limited to just that, i know its probably not the most realistic expectation but i think it could have some good results and whoever they choose will definitely have lasting popularity just based on being in smash bros.

I agree, as i said to n3on i was mainly thinking of ghirahim when i was stating this, although i only brought it up towards demise when it was sort of the same scenario, I dont think demise is that interesting myself so i dont think hes got that much of chance either.

Well then we pretty much meet up at the point where we all agree on everything. A slight change is most fitting. And yeah that's what I meant by mixed feelings with a substantial change, half would probably like it, some might be bummed. I'm thinking more evolution than revolution, y'know?

The costume thing would be a middle finger to his fans, also he may not be a one shot wonder as he is very important to the zelda series, it would be easy to make a game about the resurrection of the dark one, demise and ganondorf in one zelda plot would be amazing/devastating.

B: Ganon controls a dark magic ball that he can move around (similar to zeldas fireball but not as lenient) after let go takes a second to explode putting the opponent in the shock stance (similar to ganons old b up) then send them flying away while doing alot of damage.

B Up: Dark portal, ganon walks into the shadows and reapears where the dark door is (you can aim where you want the dark door to appear.)

B Over: Keep the same.

B Down: Your shockwave idea.

Change some of ganons a moves to include his sword, and badabing we have a more unique dark king.

3. King K. Rool

5. Demise

Very important to the Zelda series?
I beg to differ. You only even know of his existence for 30 odd minutes of gameplay (out of seventeen? 40ish hour long games).

The dark one HAS been resurrected! In the form of Ganondorf. That's why a costume change makes sense.
I'm not sure Demise has many fans who aren't just primarily Ganondorf fans anyway.

Whoever made this roster did a damn fine job and with a few tweaks here and there is basically identical to my predicted roster.

I think it was N3ON who made it, so well done.

Demise is the only reason the Zelda series exist is because of him and you know of him the whole game (you just don't see him until later). He is super important, I don't see why more people don't realize this (maybe because skyward sword isn't popular?)

I think it was N3ON who made it, so well done.
I agree. It's a truly excellent roster and very very similar to mine too which I'm going to post a bit later. Just have to finish photoshopping the layout after work.

As a prediction roster, it's near perfect. For my ideal, not so much (not a big fan of Toon Zelda or Pacman) but w/e.

Demise is the only reason the Zelda series exist is because of him and you know of him the whole game (you just don't see him until later). He is super important, I don't see why more people don't realize this (maybe because skyward sword isn't popular?)
He is important to the technicalities of the story. But not to the franchise on a whole.

Not sure why there Demise is the only reason Zelda exists. His only link to other games is Ganondorf who himself isn't even in half of the Zelda games.

I'm guessing Skyward is the first Zelda game you played?

So I made another roster. We clearly have too many already don't have enough of those. It's in the spoiler to help not clutter the page.

I made sure no series goes beyond 4 characters to help keep scale down, and never added more than one character to a series save for Metroid, which really needs the same treatment Kirby series got in Brawl. Only two more 3rd-party characters, 6 new Nintendo series characters, and 15 new characters altogether (16 if one counts Mewtwo as new). The character selection is 51 characters, being 55-56 characters total when counting alternate forms and transformations. Unlike that other guy, I'm perfectly willing to accept criticisms for the roster. What do you guys think?

Sorry to pivot the subject for those of you still talking about Demise.

I would be surprisingly okay with that roster. Asides from Waddle Dee and Dark Samus, I would actually be really pleased if that were anything close to the final roster. Honestly, even though I may be a bit bias (I've seen some rosters with all my favs and even then I meh) I like it more than most. Good job at making it interesting as well.

Also lacks Shulk and a bit of Dillon instead of Andy/Starfy but I'd live.
