Roster: or how i learned to stop worrying and jump on the bandwagon of roster threads

Here's my stab at a character roster...in a thread this time with whatever pics google image search gives me. Apologies for how boring the mario and pokemon sections are but i think they've been done to death everywhere and everyone opinion is firmly decided at this point over subjects such as Geno and Lucario.

**Mario Series**
1. Mario
2. Luigi

3. Bowser

4. Peach

5. Bowser Jr

- I think people by large agree on how high Geno's chances are in brawl. I mean he did appear higher than Olimar on Sakurai's poll. Joint second in fact with Ike (yes, that previously confirmed Ike), Diddy and Ridley. Anyway his appearance doesnt show big-papa-Sakurai considers him 1st or 2nd party but more consideres the rights to be easy to obtain. Bowser Jr is a strong possibiliy as well. I'll let the experts argue for his inclusion. Paper Mario shouldnt be ruled out as a possibility either.

**Pokemon Series**
7. Pikachu

8. Jigglypuff

9. Mewtwo

10. Pokemon Trainer

11. Lucario

-Lucario's controversial...controversialish i suppose. I dont care if he's there or not but many people seem to want him and pokemons a gigantic franchise for nintendo and will have the second most reps after mario.

**The Legend Of Zelda Series**

13. Zelda-Sheik (for this list i'l count characters as in the playing experience they offer - zelda/shiek offers one playable experience so i'm not taking into account production time/character model etc..ergo Sheik-Zelda=One Character as far as this list is concerned)

-I was skeptical to cell shading at first but the numerous WW Link move sets have turned me to his favour. I think its safe to say that Zelda getting an extra representative from Melee isnt out of the question. The two contenders, with Twilight Princess being such a dominant force in brawl so far and with cell shading sort of confirmed, are Midna and Vaati. Midna's more popular and Vaati could act as a boss in the S.E. Midna all the way.

**Metroid Series**
17. Samus/Zero-Suit Samus

18. Ridley

-Ridley is essential. Metroid is important enough a franchise for at least 3 reps. There is no worthy characters who bring anything new. Sakurai throws in Zero-Suit Samus. End.

**Star Fox Series**
19. Fox
20. Krystal
21. Falco

-I know, i know it doesnt read Wolf two lines above this. Thats becuase i think they both have as much move set potential as each other without being clones. And with the S.E. recruiting bosses and how easy it would be to clone Wolf from Fox for the S.E. as well as Flaco's established popularity with smashers i think all roads are leading to falco at this point.

**Donkey Kong Series**
25. Donkey Kong

26. Diddy Kong

27. King K Rool

-WHOA THERE PICKLE? This rosters been following the status quo of other rosters so far. I thought it was unanimously decided that Donkey Kong's many many franchises wern't popular any more and King K Rool doesnt have any originaliy and would be a bowser clone. If you thought that as you saw KKR's name just now then...you were probably reading it in your head. But if you had thought that previously you are quite wrong. I know D.K. and co's popularity is dwindling lately but that still doesnt detract from the fact its nintendo's 4th selling franchise and the 9th biggest selling OF ALL TIME (source - wikipedia - so take that with a pinch of salt) and deserves as much as the star fox franchise which has only had 5 or 6 games (im not sure). However should we judge character inclusion on importance alone? No or we'd end up having smash brothers with Walugi and Daisy ad Mother Brain. King K Rool however does also have tremendous moveset potential. Look at his many aliases over the years (Pirate, Mad Scientist, Boxer)...all one extremly creative game devoloper would have to do would be to merge all these into a moveset. I dont have the imagination but thats why im not working for nintendo...that and the court order Miyamoto has out on me. Also who would be angry at K Rools inclusion? Not many of you im sure. He ticks the three boxs - importance, moveset potential and to a lesser extent popularity. Not sometihng many do.

**Earthbound/Mother**
28. Lucas

29. Masked Man *OR* Ness

-Lucas is in. And what an uproar it has caused to. Debate's are raging over Ness's chances of being included in brawl. Im not going to bother adding to the debate but i aknowledge that Ness still has a chance but i think most people would prefer Masked Man from Mother 3 as a playable character. He offers an interestng moveset and an original appearance and may also add to the chance of mother 3 being released internationaly on virtual console. However Ness is one of the original 12 so alot of affection towards the overly-size-headed freak is shown by smashers. Given that and the possibilitys PSI offers for a new moveset means Ness shouldnt be ruled out.

**Wario/Yoshi/Series that have evolved out of Mario Franchises**
30. Yoshi

31. Wario

-For the record i see smashing in yoshis face as another reason to look forward to brawl.

**Fire Emblem Series**
32. Ike

33. Micaiah *OR* Marth

-Dont get me wrong i love Fire Emblem but these delusions of grandure its fans have around the internet regarding smash is annoying. 3,4 or sometimes 5 character spots in peoples rosters wasted on a series that only made it out Japan a few years ago and to be fair is nothing short of your generic japanese rpg. Dont get me wrong i love fire emblem (deja vu?) but it deserves 2 reps at most. Marth i take is a goner since Ike seems to have a very similar moveset. Of course they could speed the smegger up and give him an agility based swordsmans moveset..but it looks like meta knight took up that. Black Knight is perfect Ike clone for the devolopers to turn into a boss battle in the S.E. Micaiah (being a good way to promote the new game as well as bringing in a possible original moveset with a mage character).


**F-Zero**
34. Captain Falcoln

-Black Shadow is a menace to smash brothers. The fact people are considering this generic, boring, unimportant, movesetpotentialess, pile of sludge is a testament to how awesome F-Zero is and how people want 2 reps. I think black shadow is generic villain in every way...appearance, name, mannerisms, personality. Did i mention he has no move set potential...probably ive typed that alot lately. He is also not as important to the series as Samurai Goroh and Pico and its safe to say that Goroh deconfirmation was a message from Sakurai that the Captain flys the flag for F-Zero alone this time.

**Retro Characters**
35. Ice Climbers

36. Pit

37. Mr. Game And Watch

38. Sukapon

-Lil Mac, Baloon Fighter, Mach Rider, Duck Hunt Dog, Takamaru. There so much potential for future smash's in the field of retro character but for now ive chose Sukapon adn MR-G&W. The icon theory more or less confirms G+W...alogn with the fact he has an original moveset. He'll be different this time around. Probably to destract you from the new WTF? character - Sukapon. The guy oozes moveset potential and was the star of nintendo's first (good) fighting game.

**Other Franchises**
39. Captain Olimar

40. Tom Nook **OR** Animal Corssing Human

41. Ray 01

42. Isaac

-Olimar is in end of story. An Animal Crossing character is also in - it could be Nook. Those people could be his nephews in the background. I'm not going to talk about that anymore im sick of hearing about it. However two charcters who are vastly popular from nintendo's canon of characters. Isaac and Ray01. Both have moveset potential and Isaac (as im sure youve seen) has much more beyond his generic swordsman with stupid hair appearance would suggest. Ray-01 has a larger franchise still going and not two games and a cult following. I went for both becuase i couldnt decide between the two. I mean 45 charcters is not too mcuh to ask for considering the patitence we've had to display with Smash and the time they've had to perfect this game.

**3rd Party**
43. Solid Snake
44. Sonic
45. Mega Man **OR** Bomberman **OR** Banjo-Kazooie **OR** Master-Chief

-Ok maybe not the last one. Halo 3 rocks but Smash will...ahem...smash it to bits. Anyway. Sonic...I have nothing more to say that hasnt been said already. I however would like to justify Snake in brawl. Metal Gear Solid is one of the greatest games ever as is MGS2 and 3. He is also one of the most well written and in-depth video game characters ever. But that isnt enough for a ticket into smash. This is essentially 'nintendo-all stars'. I know he had Metal Gear but thats not enough. Why i think Solid Snake is an excelent inclusion is becuase he represents an imporant part in nintendos history (as does Sonic) in representing Sony who are nintendo's biggest rivals. What better way to represent them by showing a charcter who prospered away from nintendo after jumping ship. I know that not WHY hes in. Hes in for business reasons and becuase Sakurai was asked by whathisname but if you look at it from that perspective then Solid Snake is infact represeting an important part of nintendos history.

Who should fill the third third place? Mega man? He was one of the biggest selling characters on the Nes and SNes and is included in Sakurais poll (however so was Sora, Chain Chomp and James Bond). An appearance in smash is exactly the sort of thing capcom would need to boost his popularity up on the vc as well as openiong them up to further business ventures on the DS/WII. Bomber man has less chance than Mega Man because he didnt feature on the poll and probably isnt as popular as MM...but Hudson and Nintendo have been rubbing shoulders alot lately. Hudson do devolop Mario Party. Both of these guys are contendors for the THIRD THIRD PARTY SLOT. But lest us not count out Banjo and Kazooie just yet. Look at the facts

-Important way to represent one of nintendo's greatest second party devolopers.
-Probably the 2nd and 3rd greatest platform games on the n64 were Banjo and Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. (After Mario 64 of course).
-Very popular with everyone...just noone belives they have a chance.
-Great moveset potential.
-OWNED BY MICROSOFT.

Lets look into that. Why would microsoft stop nintendo from using b+k? Well, why exactly? Banjo and Kazooie would not exactly raise Smash Brothers sales highter than they are (Solid Snake and the inevitale Sonic inclusion will do that). Banjo and Kazooie 3 is coming out exclusivly for XBox 360 next year. What better way to advertise than on the nintendo Wii....exactly the console of choise for the platformer audience. B+K's inclusion in Brawl would greatly increase Banjo and Kazooie's sales and also might even sway some Nintendo fans to buy a 360...im sure many are considering it. And in a way thats why they wont be in...because nintendo wouldnt want to help microsoft in any way.....but its not impossible as many would argue. And the only thing stopping them from getting in is Nintendo and not Microsoft. Oh and the fact there are more important/popular third party choices.

So Mega-Man or Bomberman (pending that Geno doesnt take up that place which is doubtful considering the fact he originated from a mario game and doest represent a franchise. When Sakurai stated there would be a total of three third party characters in Brawl he probably knew we'd all be looking for third party franchises and not third party mario characters).

46. Captain N: The Games Master

-Basically Captain N was a cartoon cashing in on the suceess of nintendo and the 'new videogame' craze they said wouldnt last. I'm not deadly serious but hed be a funny wtf character and a good way of representing what can happen when Nintendo go badly wrong...ie - Wand of Gamelon. And in case your wondering the fruity blonde guy is none other that SIMON BELMONT and the green thing there is MEGA MAN. Yes....terrible. You dont have to be a rocket scientists to realise that im not exactly passionate about this one but its just a stupid idea i thought id put in thats probably been said before. If i had to cut down to 40 to make it more reasonable:

Fire Emblem: Ashnard, Lyn, Black Knight
F-Zero: Samurai Goroh, Pico, Deathborne

I wouldnt want to it just seemed logical to cut one of the newer franchises being introduced. Captain Olimar many would argue is essential and the animal crossing character is more or less confirmed.

Gun to my head..Ray or Isaac i'd cut Isaac. Custom Robo is a much bigger franchise and Ray 01 sort of beats him in originality, although i aknowledge that Isaac is far from another swordsman.

Masked Man is already in.

Bowser Jr isnt a character i feel passionatly about and im open to him being in or out but his paintbrush and a possible shadow mario transformation do mean he has great moveset potential.

The same with SC link, hes in because he is generally poplar with most people and he does represent a whole part of the zelda franchise.

I was the same with Isaac but if you search out one of the many fan-made movesets around here somewhere then you'll understand. (or maybe not).

Takamaru is a good character but Ray 01 has an internationaly released franchise that is quite popular as well as a very unique appearance character and moveset.

K Rool is a good choice for my aforementioned reasons.

I love the image selection! Anyway, I think the list is great. I don't really have much of a problem with any of it. I would be perfectly happy with this roster, as long as Isaac makes it in. Also, Banjo-Kazooie would be absolutely perfect for Brawl. Their myriad moves in their games would translate wonderfully into a moveset. It's unfortunate that they have little chance of making it into the game.

I also love the idea of Banjo and Kazooie but i cant see it happening. However it isnt as black and white as 'Microsoft own Banjo and Kazooie. Microsoft wont let them in Brawl' and i thought itd adress that here. Im imensly looking forward to Banjo-Kazooie 3.

Another thing about K Rool is that it wouldn't make sense for them to be flaunting around Diddy Kong so early if there wasn't already another DK character planned. Think about it. Why would they add a new character to the series and then just show it off this early, unless there's another character they're keeping under the curtain for that franchise? In Melee, the franchise which got just 1 new character(Starfox) had that character unlockable. I know Brawl's not Melee. but it just would make more sense to do it that way.

Well thanks.

Since some people have mentioned that the pictures are good i replaced the boring ones ie - Peach, Bowser, Boswer Jr etc. with more unconventinal choices. I intend on updateing my'reserves' section later to make it better.

I have but one problem with your list RARE DIDN'T BETRAY ****. Nintendo SOLD them, Rare didn't leave them. It was just one of the many buisness mistakes Nintendo has made in the past.

I realise wikipedia can be edited by anyone but wrong information doesnt stay there long and that can be taken as nintendo selling them or rare moving of there own accord to Microsoft. Its all a matter of perspective. I realise alot of the employees walked out in protest of this deal as well so i suppose calling the entire company 'tratiors' is unjustifiable but I only put the term in as jest because of the bitter taste it left in nintendo fans mouth.

So I'll remove it since its been taken literally and not in the way i intended it to be. Judging by the capitals i'd say you really took it the wrong way.

It's a pretty realistic list, asides from the mandatory weird characters that will make it, ie K Rool/Skapon/Geno. Overall, though, Roster's have become pretty standardized at this point.

If Black Knight made it in over Marth or Miciaiah id hardly be angry. Marth has the edge because he has more of a following and is an established fighter. Miciaiah also has a following as well as interesting moveset possibilitys as well as pluging the new Fire Emblem game much like Roy did so i put them in first. I hold all my resentment for the real generic, lifeless villain some people want in Smash - Black Shadow.

We need weird characters. Its what makes this game great, the limitless possibilitys and how far removed the characters are from another ie - Marth and Kirby or Pikachu andGanondorf. And in the spirit of stupid characters who wont make it ive added a 46th character that NEEDS to be in Smash...or maybe doesnt need to be in EVER.

I did aknowledge that i lazily used google image search in the first few lines of the thread. I'm very glad i used it since i ended up finding pictures such as the Midna one....*shivers with fear of the guy in the pic*
