So far with the newcomers with have 5 humanoid characters(7 if you believe the highly probably e3 leak and Paletania leak with the mii and Paletania ), you see the problem? where the diversity the was brought with in past smash installments?

brawl introduced a monkey, an obese penguin, a knight, Anubis, hedgehog, alien space traveler?, 4 humans characters:Lucas, Zamus,Wario and snake, angel(could fall in humanoid cat. but at least the wings makes in look different), robot, wolf, lizard, turtle, what ever ivysaur is.

I wouldn't say it's concerning, but it's definitely a thing. It just seems to be the case that characters are less diverse these days. Although with Rosalina, I'd say Luma is as much a fighter as her, so that's kinda a diverse looking shape.

I had a feeling this topic was coming as soon as I posted what I did in that leak thread, heheh.

Coming from someone whose #1 most-wanted character is a humanoid - a cartoonish, magic-using humanoid, but a humanoid nonetheless - I can say some body-type and species diversity would be nice to see (there's a reason my second and third most wanted are Ridley and K. Rool, in no particular order).

Lets completely ignore how all five newcomers, who just happen to be human(oid), are all very unique characters.

South Park needs to be represented.

As South Park was made a game on the Nintendo 64.

Princess Kenny could easily replace palutena.

This really isn't a problem... I mean representing females, villains or an entire franchise is kind of important. I think diversity is nice in a roster. It opens room for more possibilities... But body shape? Idk.

Only non-humanoids I can think of are Pac-Man, Dixie Kong (maybay) and Ridley.

Are we talking about human? Or humanoid?

Then I can't count K. Rool :/ Idk what other non-humanoid characters are possible as newcomers?
(maybe?) Wii Fit Trainer.
Wii Fit Trainer is alien sent here to prepare man's physical ability to prepare them for galactic war.
raccoon merchants, an a green-haired goddess. :p
Idk if we cound Nook as a humanoid. I mean you'd say the space animals are humanoid, right?
And Palutena is totally humanoid.

Still up Peach's dress.
Of course that being said; Villager has a completely different body shape from Wii Fit Trainer. One is cartoony, one has far more realistic proportions.

I wouldn't worry though. I'm fairly confident we're getting at least one of the following; Dixie, K. Rool or Ridley.

Technically, Megaman is a robot and Wii Fit Trainer is a mannequin. Also, "humanoid" doesn't mean you're human. Fox and Sonic are anthropomorphic humanoids too.

There's also all kinds of diversity. Many people complain about the lack of females in these games. We already have two new ones. But we don't have any gay, lesbian or transgender individuals yet. Maybe Disco Kid, Birdo or Vivian should be included for the sake of diversity.

If anything, I'm more concerned over the lack of new villains at this point.
If they threw in a space dragon or something, along with a snake haired she-devil, I'd be all cool with the roster diversity wise.

Lack of diversity of body shapes is probably the biggest thing I've railed against with rumors that overdo it with swordsmen and such. The other day I saw a roster with Robin, Shulk, and Isaac in addition to the characters we already have, and my eyes rolled so hard I could see my brain.

Villager and Mega Man are our characters of diminutive size. WFT and Rosalina are more humanoid, and Little Mac is uniquely in between. I'm convinced that the remaining newcomers will be more distinct than a bunch of humanoid JRPG characters. This is also one of the biggest reasons I want Ridley in, because his size and shape are distinct from the other newcomers and from all the past veterans as well.

I don't think that a humanoid shape is enough of a reason to actively want a character not to join, but it is a check in the plus column for certain characters to join.

Honestly it's not like all the humanoid characters are so similar anyway, so I wouldn't be bothered to see one or two more show up, provided we get a few less common body shape additions.

Um, TC, I'd fix that spelling if I were you, because any more new misspellings will cause Palutena's army to swiftly ascend upon you with curses and violence that would send Ridley into frightened conniptions.

And this is AFTER the Pale Tuna jokes.

This is a huge part of why I don't want anymore Fire Emblem characters. We already have 2, they don't really differ that much in terms of gameplay, or aesthetics. Is a 3rd one really necessary? I mean, it's not even a top Nintendo franchise. It's had 13 games, but the best selling one of those has only topped 1m sales. That's not impressive in terms of Nintendo's sales.

...man I really hate it when people abuse the diversity card.

Not directed at you OP BTW, just in general.

Gotta disagree with the idea that Ike and Marth don't differ much in terms of game-play... Which in fact kinda makes me realize that wanting or not wanting characters based on something like their proportions is really kinda silly. Yeah there's characters like K.Rool and Ridley that a lot of us want to see get in, but I'd like to think that's based on their merits beyond "not looking humanoid."

Let's not forget that Rosalina's Luma is a very small character that is not humanoid in shape at all, and it appears to share a few moves with Rosalina as well as possibly even having a few moves of it's own.

Characters like are Ridley and Dixie among others are still perfectly viable, and with this being said I'd also like to add that there are not as many likely newcomers left that would have unusual proportions.

other than ivysaur anything that moves on 2 legs can be determined as humanoid.

I think a big psycho crocodile and murderous, cunning dragon are needed.

I don't really mind Humanoid. I mean, 90% of the characters are going to have the human anatomy, therefore most will look human. At least we got ROB and others, but in all sense of the word, Lucario, Dedede, and the rest of the newcomers had the same anatomy, two legs, two arms, head on top of torso.

But maybe I'm over-thinking this...

I don't think characters should get in just because they're non humanoids. Just like how a character shouldn't get in just because they're female (or male for that matter) or a villain.

Characters need to get in for numerous reasons.

Putting females in for being female is ridiculous.

Making original female characters for their own series or as an addition to an existing series is something else but just looking for girls who aren't really that important/interesting and including them in corssovers to fill some kind of female quota is ridiculous.

Indeed. I really can't stand how sometimes people get all off over not having a 5050 male and female roster in any fighting game ever just because Soul Calibur does it. Ihave female characters I would like seeing in the roster, sure( Lip, Mona, Bayonetta etc.) but not for the sake of being female, it's because thee characters interest me with their personalities, not because of what's between their legs.

I agree. Female characters shouldn't be put in for the sake of females. While I do wish there were some to grace us instead of just being picked from the bottom of the barrel, like some would suggest.

We have Rosalina and Wii Fit Trainer (mainly). In terms of newcomers, I would be okay with female versions of Villager and Pokemon Trainer, Dixie Kong and/or Palutena. We don't need to pick, in serious predictions, characters that don't play that big of a role. Like Jody Summer or something like that.

Dixie Kong isn't a good choice though, functionally she didn't have DK64 to develop her beyond running and twirling. KI has 3 games total and only of them is recent Palutena also didn't really do much in the game. Neither did Rosalina but quite frankly Mario only having 4 characters again would have been crazy and they had to pick someone so why not the flavor of the week?

Personally, I haven't played the new DKC/KI games. I'm just okay with them being in. I kind of want Palutena because she seems interesting to me. It kind of makes sense because Nintendo seems to be trying to bring both series back.

DK has that main villain they've been neglecting.

KI has only one more game than ROB. Think about it.

I've thought about it and it's dumb.I don't see why number of games should be a bigger determining factor than reception, influence, popularity of the individual in question, and of course, potential personal bias of the guy in charge.

I agree, I'd rather see K. Rool than Dixie.

In regards to KI, relevancy has never really had much to do with inclusions. How many Americans knew anything about Fire Emblem? And how many characters did they get in their Smash debut? Okay, so maybe they were bigger in Japan. What about Ice Climbers? How many games did they have? Not sure how many people knew about them before. Game and Watch? Sure he had a lot of games, but who honestly remembered him? The Earthbound characters? PIT? Pit wasn't relevant until he was in Brawl. What's important is that Nintendo is now trying to bring KI back, and Palutena is the only other rep I'd want to see from KI.

What about Wii Fit Trainer? Sakurai's precise reason was because nobody asked for her.

Yknow which non-human characters would be good for this roster?

Bandanna Dee
Dillon
Chibi Robo
Ridley (I guess)
Rayman or Bomberman maybe... :3

Totes for Bandanna Dee though.

Americans were irrelevant for Melee, Roy was advertisement. This is the wrong place to discuss this so I'm gonna cut it here.

A Waddle Dee with a bandana. Yeah...
He could probably use some Ninja Kirby moves.

And he has a spear. Do any other Smash characters use spears? (Unless I'm forgetting someone...)

Also, totally not humanoid.

Like half of those people count as humanoid. Ridley and Bandana Dee are non-humanoid. Rayman is arugable bc he has no limbs. Everybody else is humanoid.
