I didn't think it was bad to roll a lot. I think it's important to keep it unpredictable though. I've played a lot of matches where the opponent has the exact same idea as me and we both roll the same way 3-4 times. Things could have gone differently had one of us switched it up and rolled the opposite way.

Rolling away from your opponent isn't necessarily a bad idea unless they have a projectile or a move like falcon kick with a lasting hit box. Rolling into your opponent is a terrible idea though 99% of the time.

Rolls are almost globally better in this but getting predicatable with rolls means eating a downsmash or as Red said getting caught by something like Falcon Kick. Generally if I roll it's usually once and then I downsmash if the person rolled with me.

If rolling a lot helps you win then do it. If people start predicting and punishing you quit doing it. You do what works, simple as that.

Rolling a lot does not make you bad, especially in this version where rolls definitely are better than before. Rolling is bad was something that developed in Melee since wavedashing was a safer option and rolling could be punished much more easily since the opponent could wavedash to punish you.

That being said, rolling carelessly does make you bad in the same way that spamming any predictable move does. If your opponent knows you love rolling a certain way over and over, prepare to eat a smash attack or other punishing move from a smart opponent.

It's not bad, no, but if overused it slows the game down and just makes the fight irritating for the other person.

Rolling a lot, in and of itself, is not bad.

Being predictable with your rolls is bad. Rolling for the sake of rolling is bad. Mix it up, keep your opponent guessing, if they start to consistently punish you for rolling in a certain way, change how you approach your rolls.

The only bad strategy is a losing one. (or a super scummy one like akuma in street fighter 2)

rolling is a great way to eat a dsmash from peach/marth/etc
dropping shield [perfect shield], acting out of shield, and even spot dodging are all generally better options than a roll.

three months after this game is released, everyone who is still interested in the game will have several answers they'd love to show you. For now, i can show you two.

forgot to add, the only overtly bad reason you want to avoid backrolling is that it is habit forming. You may end up becoming predictable and others will feed on you once their in your head, nibbling on your mind nuggets.

I roll quite a lot but it's to position myself for a grab or to get away safe. But I don't think I overdo it, whenever I feel like I'm doing it too much I stop and do something else. Of course it isn't bad. But depending on the characters and your playstyle it's up to you to find out.
