Smash Rookie
Hopefully, I didn't miss a thread already about this.
I am very happy with the way SSBB is shaping up. But there is one major thing I wish Sakurai would do: include a Rivals mode (or something similar to that) in the Wi-Fi multiplayer mode. Already we have seen a "With Friends" mode and a "With Anyone" mode. But as many of you may have already surmised, there is something left out of those two modes. The problem I see is as follows:
1. The "With Friends" mode is a pain in the butt to obtain friends because of the whole Wii number exchange.
2. The "With Anyone" mode is easier to just start playing with people obviously. Unfortunately for anyone who takes Smash even slightly seriously, there's no gaurantee you'll run into a serious gamer any time in the near future. I may, for instance, run into a hundred crappy gamers before (by chance, remember), I finally run into a challenge. And to add insult to injury, when I finally do run into a gamer that is equal to or above my degree of aptitude, I have no way of hooking up with him or her to enjoy and learn from that experience again. Now I have to wait for chance to smile upon me again before I run into a challenge.
I would like a rivals mode because it would allow me to contact people who I know are good challenges (and thus I can have more fun and learn from their techniques).
I know Nintendo is trying to appeal to the casual gamers. I know that's probably why Sakurai accomodated for them by adding even more simplicity and other pro-casual features to Brawl (like spectator mode). But it seems to me, if Sakurai simply included a Rivals-ish mode option into the Wi-Fi multiplayer, it wouldn't discourage casuals (it would only be on of three options, after all) and it would please the faithful, hardcore gamers like us.
Sakurai has also mentioned numerous times a concern for privacy. That's great. But a Rivals mode wouldn't impede on anyone's privacy or endanger your own--it's just your universal gaming tag that doesn't even give your Wii number let alone any other personal information (take the tag system from XBox live for example). And if someone doesn't want to join a match, they can just reject the invitation.
I think this is a totally reasonable request, and I think it would greatly improve satisfaction with the online gaming. What about you?
