In the above video, at 0:54, you see a barrel sitting there. Ike hits the barrel with an attack, and it EXPLODES, killing hitting Mario.

Now, we know that there are special exploding crates, marked with a flame symbol to let you know they're explosive. But this barrel was not marked. So, this may banish items from tournaments once again, unless we can turn off Crates/Barrels/Capsules (hopefully we can)

Thoughts?

EDIT: I have no idea why I said it killed Mario, just forget that xD

Anyway, I was thinking about this, and watched it again, and realized Mario went from 13 to 52 Damage. The box definitely exploded and no items came out.

It got me thinking about the power of the Barrel's explosion. 39 Damage makes you want to just write it off as "OMG TEH ECKSPLOJINS R BAK BANN T3H EYETEHMZ!!", but then you realize that First Mario caped it, which always adds power to projectiles, and right after Mario Capes it, Ike uses an Ftilt (?) on it, probably adding more power.

Now altough its clearly an exploding box, it doesn't seem that devstating. The knockback wasn't a lot, especially considering it was boosted twice. Maybe tey won't be as much of a risk this time around.

And also, again there is the possibility that crates and barrels themselves can be turned off, solving the whole thing.

Regardless of exploding barrels, the random appearance of items and their location have a tendency of unbalancing game play, and take actual skill away from being in a match.

Yes, but in the past, exploding containers were what really sealed the deal to ban items.

Regardless if thats how they got banned in the first place, or if exploding crates coming back, I highly doubt the community will allow items back just because there already so used to no items. The only exception would be final smashes, that is the only item that has a chance.

Very inaccurate and misleading. Here's how it went down in the video.

- A gift box appeared AFTER Ike had already killed Mario
- Ike tossed the box up into the air before going after Mario.
- The box landed on its side. It did not explode (And as we know, explosive crates in Melee had a tendancy to go off almost immediately).
- Mario attacked the crate with his cape. Once again, crate did not go off.
- Ike hit the crate once more, causing it to explode and damage Mario a good deal...but not killing him.

It's interesting to note that with ALL of the videos from E for All, DOJO, and Whobby, this is the FIRST noteable instance of an exploding container that wasn't marked to be explosive. As far as "random exploding containers" go, the events in this video were pretty darn tame. Perhaps containers don't go off immediately like in Melee, which is a good thing. That would mean that if an item appeared right in front of an attack, there's a very good chance the player won't get blasted.

Of course, the ideal chance is 0.00%. We also don't know if containers can be turned off yet. So while this video does confirm exploding containers, there's a really good chance their chaotic nature has been greatly toned down. (For those who played enough SSB64, it's noteable to mention that their containers weren't nearly as chaotic as Melee's either. Melee' exploding container rate was actually a pretty unique situation.)

Exploding Containers far from Confirmed.

If you watch it closely, the barrel actually flies into Mario before it explodes. Its not a true exploding container. The only thing that happened is the breaking animation of a barrel was changed to an explosion because they didnt want to animate a present busting.

What actually happened is that Marth launched a barrel at Mario and is busted.
