So I've come to realize that whether I'm playing 64, Melee, or Brawl, I always get hit when my opponent is on the edge, even if the player is a complete scrub. I always try to attack, get too close, and get hit. It's pretty minor, but when it happens every single time it starts to add up and get annoying.

So in general, with any character, what should I do when the opponent is on the edge?
With every character you face, try to measure how far he can hit someone from the edge by edgehopping and doing an aerial. After that, by keeping that perfect distance you can outspace any of his options.

For example, a Falcon player will often jump and fair at you if you're too close. If your Falcon opponent has a tendency to do it too much, keep the right distance and punish it accordingly.

Characters with projectiles will have other options which you have to be wary of.

Id say just kill better and/or work on your gimping/offonstage guarding

Some characters can obviously edgeguard better and some can get up with more options

Pay attention to when the edge is their only option and keep an eye on their % if they do make it there

Grab can counter alot of edge options except for maybe dropjumping or if they shield jump correctly

When im hanging on the ledge , I like to mix it up with simple edge attacks and edgerolls.
when your edguarding someone thats already mad it back to the edge, try to time your attacks to hit right after his invincibility frames end

Just keep his options in mind. He can roll, he can ledgehop aerial, he can do a getup attack or a simple getup. Try to stay alert enough to outspace all of these and punish. If he keeps hitting you, just run away until he gets back on the stage, lol. If you know he's gonna do something, shield will probably block it so that you can do a shield-grab. Rolls mix that up, but especially at 100+, you'll have time to notice what he's doing and punish.

If you get hit all the time from the edge, ask yourself the following questions (I'll put my own answers in red):

  • why do I get hit by an opponent on the edge?
--> too close to the edge
    --> you didn't expect it.

[*]is it because I'm too close to the edge?
    --> probably
[*]does my opponent always attack from the edge if I'm too close to it?
--> if you always get hit by it, he might not have any reason not to do it more.
--> yes, because he isn't a smart player and he doesn't expect his opponent to adapt to it.

[*]if so, how can I punish it?
--> take the right distance to avoid his attack and punish him accordingly (may it be grounded distance or a well placed jump)
--> out-prioritize the attack he uses with one of your own.

[*]is it possible for me to bait that getup attack/aerial out of edge?
--> if he doesn't expect you to adapt, you can indeed bait it by getting close to the edge (or at least faking the intention to) and then avoiding his attack just in time.

You can also tell his options by how much damage he has.

Generally, people do not roll or get up attack above 100 percent as it is MUCH slower.

^Yeah

Also certain characters have better/more options

Like how Yoshi can double jump due to his DJCC into an aerial or something similar.

Or Link can use a boomerang or just up b and regrab.

Or Ness can use PK magnet to regrab.

that's kind of a loop!
anyway, fsmash is not a good choice, because your opponent may have a better DI for that...
you should have in mind his % and be creative.

assuming the person is HANGING on the edge, not recovering towards the edge.

this is because my cyclical flowchart is from the aspect of fighting a mystic edge monster that never leaves the edge ever in the world

If they are hanging on the edge I wait for them to stand up/ledge attack/ledgehop, then I fsmash.
With which character do you f-smash?

In my opinion, there's a job of mixing up that has to be done by the player on the edge, and a job of prediction which has to be done by his opponent.

With tether grab characters, as soon as I see them get up, I get ready to grab.

With anyone else, I just try to fsmash once they get up or space a grab in.

If they ledgehop, I just react to the situation. Very character and stage specific.

Why does everybody fsmash? Like, so much of the community does it that it's painfully predict and avoid.

It depends on your opponent's habits/character. I'm not going to recommend just doing one thing.

on dreamland luigi is relatively hard to punish because he can jump from the ledge onto the first platform.

my techniques: fsmash if they ledge hop arial attack or ledge attack (out-space them). if they get up -> shield then fsmash will just push them off and leave you vunerable to attack. in that situation i recommend grabbing them. dosnt work so well with kirby or falcon though.

What do you recommend doing?
most of the players who play pika just fsmash, and it gets so easy to avoid. i myself prefer to usually jump and gimp and not wait for him, either jump and nair/fair if he is far, or if he is near i sometimes jump behind him and bair onto a wall (does not work well on congo :p). another way to go about it is edge hog then ledge hop to in front of him (more to the center of the stage) to uair then continue with uair chains to bair (works really well vs mario/luigi/kirby).
