Well, remember how Pikmin 3 got a demo thing at Gamestop? ...Well, it did.
When I went, I chatted with the attendant (pretty sure I was the only one there) and eventually got her to spill the beans on what they do to the demo disks.
Apparently, Nintendo is lax enough with them that she can take the disk home and let her kids play.

Couldn't get the full scoop, (it's been awhile... and I had no idea that SSB4 was going to be one either) but this is huge! This means that A: Demos aren't set to some kind of online DRM thing to shut down when the event is over. We can play forever! B: Demo disks aren't special-made for demo Wii Us. (Unless she took one of those too. :p) Any average Wii U can play them! And C: Nintendo usually doesn't mind if the disks go missing. We really CAN play forever!

And coincidentally, she also was in charge of last year's E3 demo. Didn't remember me though...

Something tells me Sm4sh will be much better guarded. Pikmin 3 I'm sure would have nothing interesting on it. The data on the Sm4sh disk is probably something that'll warrant far better care from Nintendo employees.

See, I was thinking that, but then she said she gave her kids a Mario-something (her words) demo disk. Like, galaxy or kart or something. Or even Brawl, she wasn't really in-touch with Nintendo in general, dispite being an attendant. Hm... I think she said it was a part-time job.

Regardless, this shows it's possible for us to get our hands on that demo disk without holding them up at gunpoint.

Intriguing lead.

Let's see if anything can do anything with it.

Hey everyone! Let's break the glass case at best buy and take the wii u out of it and eject the game at an event that dozens of people will be at!!!

And we can forever play smash 4 with 20 characters from our jail cells!

Well I was thinking more of just seeing if the people at Best Buy took it home and asking them about it.

But that's a solid plan B. :troll:

And then weep over the loss of some of our most wanted newcomers when we discover that they're not playable. troll.png

But hey, there's still the plus side of getting SSB4 much earlier than expected, right? Right?!

She was boasting...my friend is a Nintendo rep (I work at gamestop) the demos are installed directly on the system, in demo mode.

Installed how per se?

Via a disk? Or download?

I don't think the demo is on a disc whatsoever, it's just installed on the system (the Wii days were probably a little different). Assuming the Wii U-nits and demos aren't in some radically different format than those that were at the GameStop Mario Kart 8 demo the other weekend, according to the manager of my local GS who I was chatting with, Nintendo remotely updated/made available for download that store's (and presumably all others participating) demo console for the MK8 weekend.

This is what it looks like when a demo is installed, courtesy of mrbigreddog on Reddit. It's not on discs, I'm not sure if they just plug in a USB or whatever, but it's most certainly something that gets installed on the system.

Even then I'm not sure what use we'd have of it if it was on discs. Demos only ever have the content they use on them, so we wouldn't be able to crack and find anything, so it wouldn't be of any use to anyone other than the few Best Buy employees' children.

If the hyped up people in line don't tear you limb from limb first. I mean, they are waiting to play the Smash Demo and probably waited in line for over 4 hours.

Well people did find out the entire roster of PSASBR due to code left on the demo so I think Nintnedo will try their best to keep things under wraps

Hmm... I must have thought that it was a disk when she said she'd take demos home. Well, sorry for leading you guys astray.

This is the same kind of demo as last year's Best Buy event where you could play all the E3 games at best buy months-a year before they all were officially released. Its the same exact website to check which BB's near you are hosting the demo as well. The Pikmin 3 thing was a different kind of demo. The same kind where you could play MK a week or two in advance at gamestop. The game's tied to the Wii U and there's a BB employee and a NoA employee sitting right in front of it at all times. The ONLY way to "steal" it would be to beat them up, bash through the Wii U's glass casing, beat off dozens of angry Smash Bros fans who have been waiting for hours to play the demo, and escape the store without getting filmed on security cameras. In other words you CAN'T get that demo disk. Even if you did you'd play it so much you'd stop feeling excited about the official release and might not even buy it if the game isn't what you thought it'd be.

Something tells me Sm4sh will be much better guarded. Pikmin 3 I'm sure would have nothing interesting on it. The data on the Sm4sh disk is probably something that'll warrant far better care from Nintendo employees.
It's silly to think they'd guard one franchise more than another. It'll have the same security as the Super Mario 3D World/Mario Kart 8/DK:TF/WW:HD demo last year... 1-3 people since they're both demos for games that won't be released for months/a year.

I worked at gamestop until last year, and this was never the case for us. Our Demo games were almost always on disc. And they'd just come to the store and put it in the system, and not come back until the day they take the disc back. And the SM and ASM had keys to all three of the booths.

However, it wasn't always a disc they'd bring.

I'm referring to the Wii U specifically.

The screen says not to eject the disc, so more than likely the demo did come on a disc like she said. It probably installs off the disc so that there's no possibility of the disc drive malfunctioning while the demo is being played.

Our store was classified as a "very small" store by Corporate. As a result, we were neglected in every way thinkable. Our drawers we stored the discs in were broken badly for about 8 years, and our back room failed the safety inspection by the fire department like 4 years in a row due to it being too small, and overstocked.

Oh, and our safe was in the bathroom.

And I speak in past tense because they finally closed the store.

In the age of digital methods of distribution, I'm surprised Demo disks would even be a need of updating the systems like they do, then again I don't know if these demo units that are used in stores these days are any different from the base console.

Actually, when updating a regular Wii U it says to not eject the disk, so it doesn't necessarily mean that there's a demo disk.

Actually, plenty of demos have data they shouldn't.

Aside from Playstation All-Stars, the demo for Resident Evil 6 revealed all of the game's locations, the Ada story mode, and all the DLC (on and off-disc) as well as the unlockable costumes for certain modes and stuff.

Getting that 'disc' will be no easy task. Sakurai has 5 large and imposing bodyguards at each Best Buy. :troll:

But seriously, I doubt that she was telling the truth, and if she was, I doubt that Nintendo would let Smash 4 into the hands of the general public.

She didn't have any reason to lie, though. And it's not like they have real Nintendo staff watching these things either, just part-time attendants. Nintendo doesn't really have a good way to watch these things.

Eh, that's true.

But this isn't some low level demo either, only a select number of Best Buys got it, so I see your point.
