When it becomes midnight on October 2nd the day changes to October 3rd which is why the game releases on the 3rd.

In addition, since you live on the west coast, you'll be able to download it at 9PM PST since the release goes off of the earliest timezone in the region (which would be 12AM EST).

Pokemon crashed the eShop massively. However, this time we won't have to worry about Japan and The Rest getting the game at the same time, so it'll be a bit easier on the servers.

It depends.

If you pay for the game in full up front (or at anytime reasonably prior to release) they'll make that order when the game becames available and you should be able to pick it up at midnight that night.

However, if you just reserve it or put some money down, they may not make the order immediately and instead you may have to wait a few days--it really varies based on a) when you pay and (b the nature of the game. (This is a pretty big release, so I'd imagine unless you get money down early you may have to wait.)

Of course, this could also depend on the nature of the pre-order; if you just order a regular copy of the Wii-U version relatively late, you might just be able to pick it up in store regardless, while if you order the special bundle you'd have to wait seeing as they likely won't just have those laying around to give you.

I remember Pokemon X didn't work right away, but that was a Worldwide release, so that might be why.

I had trouble actually making the purchase. That screen kept erroring out for about 25 minutes. Once that went through, it downloaded swimmingly. I'm not sure that everyone ran into the issue, but I recall a handful of people mentioning it.

Huh. Well, hopefully Nintendo planned ahead better this time. Splitting up the releases should help.
