Has Nintendo released any official information about how the system will work? I heard somewhere that they said friend codes were official, but I certainly hope thats not true.

Has Nintendo even officially said Brawl is online?

I wonder if the game'll be different online. I don't think the information can be sent online at the amount of frames/second Melee uses.

But I'm sure there's a forum about this somewhere.

If it requires friend code i will kill someone at nintendo. I just want to play people i dont know. Like in mario kart ds. And if ssbb is not online it would be a really bad idea for nintendo...

I don't have any friends on my Wii. ;-; Well, one.

I hope that it can be played outside of your friends. I don't think I can get very good with computers and the .. 3 real-life friends I've got that have a Wii system.

Althrough Nintendo has no officially confirmened that SSBB is online, it will still be a great game. I would enjoy online play as much as the next guy but it's still up in the air.

Nintendo is big on its younger fan base... regrettably I could see restricting online play to friends due to privacy/safety issues and concerned parents and such.

we can only hope they stop paying so much attention to the younger ages. well, they have a little bit but, they shouldnt make this game based anywhere near that.

Yeah Zodiac, I think Nintendo has a good idea who's going to be buying which games. They realize that the SSB fan base is much more diverse than other Mario sports games and such.

So again, let's hope so.

Search is your friend.

It has been said to be online, but that was said at the same time as SSBB was being pushed for a launch title.

I'm not sure they'd put Brawl online if it effected gameplay that much, actually.

I think Nintendo would keep it as Melee is before allowing "lag death" to happen.

From IGN

"Even better, the game will be fully online playable in addition to featuring a robust multiplayer mode. "My plan is to include Wi-Fi connection compatibility and online functionality. One of the primary reasons Super Smash Bros. Brawl was created was that Nintendo, when taking Wii online, wanted to have Smash Bros. to do that," added Sakurai.

I really do not get the whole "Protect younger players" thing. The friend codes don't make sense, period. What do you need to protect the players from? There's no voice chat... What, is little jimmy going to be traumatized because someone online has the username "buttsecks77263"?

They're setting precautions in place for a system they don't use.

Neat. I had no idea that it was actually almost confirmed somewhere, I just thought we all assumed that.

And I'd rather have crummy online then no online at all, for those who are fearing 'lag death' and all that. Of course there's going to be lag (Internet = lag), we're going to have to learn to deal with it.

And I don't think there's a single DS game where you cannot play against people you don't know. The thing most people complain about is that you can't say 'Hey, let's be friends' and such with said people.

SSBB is guaranteed to be online. Originally Nintendo was going to release an online-compatible version of SSB:M with the Wii as a launch title, but when this idea made it's way back to the original creator of SSB, who was about to start work on another project, he was basically like "**** that, that's an insult to all the people who will pay for it, I'm making a real sequel."

So we're guaranteed to get online in Brawl.

I hope there is online play for Brawl...lag or not.

I don't even own a Wii. I'm going to buy a Wii the day Brawl comes out.

buy a wii before Brawl comes out because most people are just waiting for brawl to come out and they wil get a Wii that day. and yes Brawl should have an online "Lobby" type of multiplayer so you can pick a game room to play in.

Hmm... Lets see... Online play with potentially dangerous people....

...or...

The entire Internet.

Which is more dangerous? I think you know. If Nintendo is letting anyone who has a Wii and a connection access all that is horrific on the internet, then why the hell do they care what goes on in a game? I demand voice chat, and I demand a good multiplayer internet interface. There's no excuse anymore.

I could have sworn that all you need is the wii's code and that they're not having new codes for every game.

That would make it a little less crappy wouldn't it?

Indeed.

On the other hand, we have to consider that online WILL lag. There's no getting around that, and while I wouldn't care much, seeing as I could kill some free time with some non-serious online matches, it may mean that the gameplay is slowed down to accommodate online. Do we want that?

I have a friend who has a video game magazine that said it would have online play. Well it didn't directly point it to brawl but it was the category.
About friend codes however I heard that they are back.

I'm not sure if I want lag online. I guess it'd be better than nothing but.. maybe not.

And yeah Android, I agree that the internet is more dangerous than Smash online but seriously, the world is a screwy place -- especially when it comes to concerned parents.

The online interface needs to be radically improved. Currently, Nintendo is on a "one code for each system" basis, and things should stay that way. However, there's plenty to be done. Firmware updates could probably allow multiple usernames per code (an extension of Mii usage, maybe?), which would be ideal for people who want to keep separate online records. Nintendo should get on that. Also, they need to find ways to enable in-game messaging, voice chat, lobbies, and chat rooms for each individual game as well as just the online community in general.

All of these little improvements that could be done for little money and with just a few firmware updates could dramatically improve the Wii's current online capability. Not only that, but it would make playing online-necessary games like SSBB a lot more satisfying in every way.

Just because the service is free doesn't mean that Nintendo should skimp on the online-functionality. Part of what makes the Wii such an attractive console is its potential for such significant improvements. Hopefully Nintendo finds a way to pull the trigger and deliver something truly great in the future.

Famous SK, I had no idea about that. While it doesn't really mean that Melee would've been re-released with an online component, it does point to the fact that Nintendo REALLY wants Brawl online. Which is very good to hear.

Paranoid, about the whole internet thing: Good point. They have no more reasons to duck and hide, as they've shown us the porn that can be found on the Interwebs.

And this thread is turning into the other one that was around like a month ago, with Paranoid asking exactly what I asked; Would you slow down Brawl so that it could be played online at full speed?

I say no. I'd rather have a crummier online experience and keep the single player/eye to eye multiplayer aspect perfect then to have all of them slowed down.

Lag will depend on our internet connection simple as that, anyone thats played Ssb64 online knows that if somone with a bad connections gets into a group of people with perfect connections, it lags terribly, when their kicked it goes back to being as if it was a 64!

So As long as you have a high speed internet conection and a good system(WII!) then you dont have to worry about anything.

Nintendo wouldnt forget their older age group, not now.

I don't think friend codes will be that bad, you can always exchange friend codes online. It will be more likely that you don't get nubs who will quit if they start to lose, etc. Either way, I'll be satisfied. And what about the parental controls on the Wii. If they are just gunna make safe-only games then what's the point? Brawl looks good to me so far. I'm juat so sick of waiting.
