I know we're all wishing for a God mode where you control the stage, item spawn, play as bosses, etc. but that doesn't seem likely.
The gamepad isn't going to be completely useless, or just an "alternative" controller to use. They are obviously going to think of some interesting options for what the gamepad has to offer to add to the gaming experience.
In game picture taking/recording: without stopping the match on the tv the gamepad player has complete control over where they move the camera on the battlefield. They can take as many pictures as they want and even record. Everything they do on the gamepad has no effect on the tv gameplay. You can fast forward to catch up or rewind to record a cool combo.
You can then post those pictures directly to Miiverse.
There will also be Miiverse contests to submit themed pictures. Winner gets a special trophy.
In game score sheet: It shows all the scores that normally show up after the match and updates them throughout the match.
Single player trophy tracker: shows the trophies you have collected throughout single player mode.
Off screen play: they are making Smash for 3DS so it makes sense to allow off screen play on the gamepad.
Stage map: shows a smaller map version of the stage showing where characters, items, trophies, enemies, etc. are (mainly for bigger stages and adventure mode).
