1. I was intrigued by MultiVersus ever since the initial leak got spread around. That first photo leak (the one with Gandalf) was so amusing at the time and when the game was officially announced I got super stoked. The idea that any character from any Warner Bros property could conceivably get in was super exciting and it made for a very fun speculation cycle.
2. Jason was one of my most wanted characters and the day that he got announced (alongside Agent Smith who was very unexpected) was a glorious day. I love big tanky characters and I love what they did with his kit. It's genuinely one of the best examples of implementing concepts and references from the source material into a moveset that the devs managed to pull off. As for least favorite? Well putting aside Reindog for obvious reasons it's kind of hard to choose because I found everyone to at least be partially fun, but I probably have to go with Agent Smith (which is ironic considering what I said earlier). He does have a few neat moves, but there is a lot more that could have been done with his kit which makes him probably the most disappointing character in my book.
3. Aside from Jason, my other most wanteds were Ruby Rose, Godzilla, and Kong. It's a shame that MultiVersus didn't thrive long enough to obtain any real third party characters outside of maybe LeBron James. And it pains my soul knowing that we were
this close to getting Ruby but the circumstances just weren't in her favor enough.
4. Positives:
- MultiVersus did have a level of heart to it when it comes to the movesets, the voice acting and interactions, the way the trailers were crafted (especially with the Powerpuff Girls trailer), and the care put into the customization, especially with the alternate costumes.
- The different forms of the stages that cater to both the casual and competitive players is very much appreciated.
- The Rifts were a neat idea that brought some much needed single player content for people like me that would get frustrated with the online component.
Negatives:
- The online was janky a lot of the time which certainly didn't help make the online experience less frustrating.
- The gameplay had its moments, but the movement just felt off to me and I never got fully used to it.
- The decision to lock the majority of the characters behind a grindfest was a terrible decision. It did help that the full roster was available offline so you could at least try the characters before purchasing them, but as someone who likes to play a wide range of characters, this just killed the flow of the game for me.
5. I will argue that, as a foundation, what MultiVersus has right now is decent enough. But if a theoretical revival were to happen, the following things need to be addressed:
- Make every single playable character available off the bat and keep the monetization strictly to the cosmetics only.
- I think what the gameplay needs is some more weight to it and in general it needed more polish with better balancing and less jank in the animation.
- In general, the game just needed to be managed better. It didn't need an entire engine overhaul and the devs had a consistent problem with releasing characters too fast without having the next characters in line be done. And in some cases they did have completed characters and...just didn't release then for some reason. Case in point: The Wicked Witch is supposedly done according to leaks and what people have discovered in the files. But for some reason she was never announced during the height of Wicked's popularity which is a massive blunder. It felt like the devs were making bad decision after bad decision, resulting in an unpolished product that was alienating players every step of the way.
Overall, MultiVersus had its moments, and I appreciate the memories and opportunities it provided to me. I got to run a fun thread, I made new friends, and if it wasn't for MultiVersus RTC, there is a chance I wouldn't have ever gotten into RWBY, and that's something I will always cherish. At the same time though, I can't help but think of all the potential that this game squandered. It had the ability to rival Smash in terms of hype character choices, and while we did get some great characters, the game didn't last long enough to reach even a quarter of its maximum awesomeness.
I'm not sure how much I would hold my breath for a theoretical revival of some kind. But if it does happen someday, I hope that the new team looks at everything that went wrong and brings the project in a new direction. I do hope it happens, and I hope that it will smash expectations.
