If using GIMP, pick an image with a solid color background, and use the magic select to capture the whole background. Use Shift+click if you need to select additional areas. If there is any gradient in the background or at the character's border, adjust the Threshold to capture most/all of it. Then go under Select>Feather Selection. Finally, use Colors>Color To Alpha.
