Random unintentional air dodging - controller issue?

Somehow I keep accidentally air dodging, screwing up my recovery. I use the pro controller with default settings, and I'm definitely not touching the shoulder buttons when these air dodges happen. Could it be a defective controller? I tried both wireless and wired and it happens in both.

SSBU has a buffering system where buffering is more noticeable. It's probably that, not your controller.

The buffering system in Ultimate is a wonderful, complex thing that thus far has allowed a lot of really baller tech to come into the mix. That said, it's also responsible for newer players often getting confused by their inputs. There's a thread on these forums explaining the Ult buffer system in detail, I'd recommend giving it a full read as it's invaluable info.
