I don't know if this has been covered before, but I tried looking for it and haven't seen it mentioned.

Is it in any way useful to use an upsmash followed immediately by a downsmash? What I mean is, utilize the mortar explosion as a shield to safely plant a mine? Or would this be a tactic that is easily punished?

eh, its pretty punishable.....I've never really tried, but usually the mortar either comes down too fast and you're open, or it stays up too long and it blows up the mine/you get punished before you're done

It would be better if you used Dsmash and then the Usmash. But, moved a little away from the mine. For example, if you hit your opponent off the edge, you can place a mine right next to the edge. When they get close, use the Usmash and it will make the mine explode. The mine has a bigger explosion which could hit the opponent if they are hanging on. I'm pretty sure the mortar adds onto the vertical effectiveness of the explosion too.

Thanks for the input.

Also to clarify, I'm referring to doing this without charging either smash. It would appear that Snake is vulnerable only during the time the mortar is falling down, as he has time to plant a mine, have the mortar explode on himself, and not blow up the mine. This is why I thought it might provide a little protection.

It does provide protection of a sort, even if it is just mindgames. People notice the mortar coming down and don't want to get hit by it. I use it occasionally but it isn't particularly effective against chars with a good ranged game.
