Question to the Melee crowd

I was just wondering the Melee crowd's thoughts on PM 3.5. What I mean is, are there people here who didn't really like or play PM before 3.5 that think it is now closer to what they want to see and are going to start playing PM more?

Usually it's one of the following things that turn Melee players off from enjoying PM partially or completely:
  1. The character's are too janky, in that they have too many unusual gimmicks that promote toxic gameplay and/or take away from the need to use proficient tech skill.
  2. Recoveries, as a variation of ^number 1, are generally too safe and are easy to bypass edgeguards with.
  3. There is too much viable character variation, and thus too many MUs to learn proficiently or to (potentially) cover with just one or two mains.
  4. The game is constantly changing, and so the metagame must - to an extent - be reset with every release.
  5. Minute differences between their how their mains play in Melee and PM. Most of the Melee community plays the 8 top tier characters, all of which play similarly to their Melee selves in PM, but with minor nerfs. But nerfs are nerfs, and some can drastically alter the character's gameplay for the better or worse, depending on who you ask.
Numbers 1, 3, and 5 are all constant aspects of PM that will most likely never change, and are still in effect. The only factors that could play into Melee players that dislike PM approving of it more are numbers 2 and 4, since PMBR has nerfed recoveries of just about every character in the roster for 3.5, and the PMDT has alluded to the fact that PM 3.00 and PM 3.5 are close to what they would consider "final releases" of the game. Despite this, PM 3.0 received a patch shortly after it's release (PM 3.02), and there has already been unofficial word from Magus and other prominent PMDT members that PM 3.5 will receive a similar patch in the near future. Further, PM 3.5 has had drastic changes from PM 3.02, even though 3.02 was supposedly a mostly complete version of the game, and most of those changes were nerfs to just about every single character (afaik, only Sheik, Jigglypuff and a 2-3 other characters were left mostly untouched).

TL;DR: afaik, the most likely reason Melee players would be more willing to play 3.5 would probably be due to recovery nerfs across the whole cast.

I enjoy 3.5 more than the previous ones because of what Echo said: The recoveries are nerfed and some of the jank is removed.

Most Melee die hard fans, myself included, love Melee's entire package.

I think it comes down to the internal intricacies and nuances of how the match ups in Melee are played and how the meta has the top tiers balanced around each other. Also, the fact that the two best characters in the game require extreme technical process and mechanical execution, and failing to do so will result in loss of stocks either by a gimp, combo, edgeguard, or self-destruct. The combos also aren't as free and seemingly mindless so it's a lot more satisfying to perform.

Honestly, the thing I have always liked better about Melee is something that some PM fans think is a bad thing: it cannot and will not change. Over the years, the Melee teir list has changed significantly. Up until a few years ago, Jiggs was really low and a few years before that, Sheik was in the first spot on the teir list. The mechanics are locked in, the movesets & matchups will never change, and the meta will always be evolving based on the foundation of the game. I feel like the development of a game dependent on the community's opinion dependent on the game without giving the game time to develop its metagame is unhealthy and dangerous for the balance because there will never be any solid ground to stand on. I've felt the PM nerfs pretty hard because I'm an Ike main in PM. He is still strong, but I keep on trying to preform tech that no longer exists. I've SD'd in tournament matches because I tried to QD-Walljump too many times after they reduced his walljumps from infinite to 2 to 1. Until they stop developing the game, PM will always be static. That may be good for some, but it will always be a shortcoming in my opinion.

Everyone is saying why they prefer Melee. I know why people prefer Melee. That isn't what I meant. Sorry if I was unclear. My point was I was wondering if 3.5 is something you would want to play seriously along side Melee? I'm wondering if 3.5 will attract more Melee only people who didn't play PM much before?

What do you mean seriously? Put equal amounts of time in it? In that case no, I'll still only play it at tournaments, I wouldn't travel 30 mins to go to someone to solely practice PM like I would for melee.

I already play PM, but I still play Melee about 4X as much.

I think 3.5 is infinitely better than 3.02. There are still some problems of recovery, some problems of jank, and significant problems of over-emphasis of matchup knowledge. I just don't like having to know 25/30 matchups intricately. I intend to take 3.5 way more seriously than I took 3.02.
