Question regarding sharing external hard drive between multiple consoles.

I'm a proud owner of both a Wii U and Xbox One. However i'm almost out of space on both of their hard drives for storing games.

I already own one external hard drive, but I would have to format it to store games - I can't though as I keep all my music on there.

So if I buy an external hardrive, can I use the same on both consoles, or do I need one each?
