Question about Recovery

Ive noticed from watching pro videos that when the Ice Climber player tries to recover using Side+B, he does so in a way where he hovers for a while before falling. When I try to do it, I just fall straight down and die. What am I doing wrong?

For the most part, Squall Hammer is the way to go. However, if you're way below the stage, Belay works well.

if you only have 1, you'll get a small lift, almost the size of an airdodge.

That's good for if you're close to the ledge, and you dont want to airdodge to the ledge (which you never want to do, if you can avoid it).

If you have both, ****. XD

belay has a HUGE reach for teleporting nana to save her, or to recover with her. sometimes when both climbers are recovering, you can be quite a distance away from nana and teleport her to you with belay. if you are coming from below, sometimes its priority will beat out an edgeguard. nana has a long invincibility time during the start of this move.

i like to be open to both choices, plus the air dodge. i always try to find the best way to recovery since they can't sweetspot.

i also like to use belay stall with solo popo, it's his fastest stall :p

But i saw a video of ChuDat where he was below FD and he faced backwards, did an ice block, and then did side B and floated all the way up and almost grabbed the edge just from his Squall Hammer...how does that work, i thouht it was only horizontal not a vertical recovery? does tapping B allow you to rapidly rise or was it a glitch with the ice move?

no. usually if you have only Popo and you mash b, the recovery is mostly horizontal and the vertical rise is limited.

but if you have both climbers and you mash quickly, the vertical recovery is great, even greater than fox's upB! i like chudat's "double save" where he goes all the way from the bottom of the stage but he can only grab the edge with popo because nana isn't high enough... but then he does a ledge drop belay to save nana! i forget about that extra belay sometimes, lol.

as long as she is not in a tumbling animation, it will work. even from a pretty long distance you can still catch her.

however if she is in a tumbling animation, popo will belay by himself and both of you might die.

you can cancel her taunt with squall and belay... you can cancel many of her moves into belay also. i've been working on some aerial/smash/tilt to belay combos. i have a match video on youtube against my friend's doc where i do a dthrow -> nana fair -> double jump belay to finish him off on FD. pretty sweet combo.
