Question about Dash Dancing

Hey! Relatively new player to competitive Melee here, I've never been to a tourney but I can easily stomp all my mates locally. I've been trying my hand at advanced level Smashing for about a year now and I will confidently say that I'm "pretty good" as I can perform most of the advanced techniques (Wavedashing, SHFFL, Dash Cancel and all that). My mains are Falco and Dr. Mario.

The one technique I'm not 100% sure on is Dash Dancing. I can perform it fine, as both my mains have good dash animations, but I never figured out from reading guides and watching gameplay how you can successfully end it. I understand it's about mindgames, you can go any direction during it, but how do you properly finish a dashdance?

You can simply wave dash in-place. From there you can perform anything you choose, at the exact location you were just in. Or short hop aerials, and in your falco-case lasers.

That tends to be the way I use dashdancing, wasn't 100% sure whether or not it was the ideal thing to do though. Thanks for the tip.

Pivot smashes and grabs. You can also complete your dash into run, crouch and do anything much faster than if you wavedashed in place.

Dash dancing is a lot of things and to talk about it generally involves discussing the neutral game of smash.

The point of dash dancing is to be able to move around while conserving most of your options. What you can do with that is a lot. The simplest thing, and the original use of it, is a bait, in which you dash inside their range and dash out, tempting them to attack. Things have come a long way since then though, and that is only the tip of the iceberg. In general, a player's understanding of dash dancing is often a good indication of how developed they are as a player (assuming they use a character that dash dances well). It's hard to discuss it without getting into very complex abstract concepts and theories about the game. A great place to learn more about dash dancing would be the Marth forums, as there is a lot of discussion about it there.

I gotta mention this. Being able to do tech != being "pretty good." Tech is actually one of the easiest things to learn in smash, as well as the most easily observed. Being able to do the techs you mentioned would merely put you on the ground floor of the competitive smash community. It's best to realise this now if you plan on playing competitively, as lots of people go in thinking they are fairly good at the game and get 4 stocked by most of the people they play at their first tournament.

I'm not saying this to discourage you, I'm saying this so that you are more aware. This game is deep, don't expect to get "good" at this game without having played in the competitive scene for at least a year or so. I hope you enjoy the hell out of it and keep with it, because it's a great game to play at a competitive level.

Thanks for the advice. And yeah, me saying I'm "pretty good" may be a bit of an overstatement but I still view myself as way below anybody who's actually played competitive before. Bots and humans are very, very different.

I assume you meant that you prefer wave dashing but dash dancing is cool.

That said, they perform to different functions and should not be lumped together with each other. For instance, you cannot dash away while still facing your enemy. If you want to keep all of the options you have while facing your opponent you have to wavedash back in order to achieve that. If you are stuck in shield you cannot immediately dash away, but you can wavedash as you can jump out of your shield. Also, with wave dashing, there is a set delay as to when you can perform an action out of it, while there isn't the same limitation with dashing (there are still limitations, obviously).

You have to be aware of the pros and cons of both and use them accordingly.

I tend to dash dance to bait a laggy move and then dash attack and take it from there.

as a Marth player I just go in for a short hopped nair (most likely SHFFL'd if I can land it.) after they try and grab. If it's against a spacie, then I always grab (them upthrows lol)

As a Falco player I just spam DAIR and hope I get them off-stage.
