Purposely SD'ing When losing?

Why do people do it?
I understand the demoralizing feeling you get when you get bodied by someone who is pretty good. but why SD because of it? I can empathize with the feeling of hopelessness but You should never give up. you should fight on even if you know you're going to lose. it allows you to learn the match-up.

EDIT:
I want people to understand I'm not talking about people who SD because their opponent accidentally SD'd at a low %. That is pretty honorable and I usually do it myself. Also I understand Lag related SD's as well. Nobody wants to deal with Lag. This thread is mainly aimed at those who SD when they lose their first stock and give up mid match.

Because they don't want to waste time? I personally never SD on purpose, because I feel like I am stealing the victory from the opponent.

I do that if the game has massive lags (like most people I assume do if Lag happens). If your enemies SD a lot, check your Internet connection, you might need a better one

I know this is not related, but **** whoever taunts when you accidentally SD. This prick really thought he was the better Mega Man just because I Side B'd when trying to recover even though I was outplaying him other than that. I ended up losing and he left as if saying "You're useless to me now". I hope he eats a big bucket of dooky

I suppose that is true. but Smash is a passtime, you're playing it to waste time in the first place.

This I can agree with. if the connection is unstable then I can understand why someone would SD. I've done this a few times myself.

Yeah I really can't get behind players who do this. It's understandable if it's because of lag, but if you SD simply because you're losing, that's just pathetic. I assume it's young kids who just got the game that do this, but if you're an active player who wants to get better, then it's pretty embarrassing.

It's very lame, I feel disrespected when someone SD's after I take their first stock. If it's due to lag, then fine. But I personally won't ever purposely SD, even in lag I'll try to win.

I do it when lag is unbearable or when I need to stop playing (I don't want to get banned for no reason).

Seriously how is it embarrassing to SD? I see it as being more humble if anything. You acknowledge the other player's skill by admitting defeat. I've competed in many chess tournaments, and people there concede all the time. They do it because they know the skilled opponent that they are facing won't make any huge mistakes. If it's pretty much impossible to make a comeback, there is nothing wrong with conceding. It's an expression of humility. Starcraft players do it all the time as well. They immediately quit the moment they realize that the game is over and there is hardly any chance to win. I don't get why people in the FGC have always disliked it when somebody forfeits a match.

Well, the unfortunate thing is you can never know for certain a persons intentions behind what they are doing. Only what you think they are doing. I can easily SD simply because I have a friend who wants to play and I do not want to keep them waiting. A reason for SD'ing that has nothing to do with the opponent.

The thing is that one should not read too much into a person's actions without knowing it for certain. Which you cannot possibly know for certain over a game you cannot directly communicate with another person.

Well personally I feel bad for people who forfeit. I will agree with you that forfeiting is a way of acknowledging that fact that your opponent is more skilled then you. but part of me just can't respect it. It feels cowardly. its just a game after all there is no shame in losing but giving up...that's just sad. There is always hope. The weird thing is I accept and respect forfeiting in most games but when it comes to fighting games I just can't.

Its just outta my nearly 2000 matches online it usually happens when you take their first stock without them barley scratching you.
Any other time its due to lag. You're right though you I can't just assume these are the only reasons they'd SD but still.

I only SD on purpose to make it fair if my opponent SDs early in the match or if the connection sucks.

I don't purposely SD because of lag, getting worked, or anything else. I fight through the lag and take my beatings.

I will admit, sometimes I purpose-SD because one of the controls of my ghetto-Gamecube controller mod fussed up and I don't really feel like playing with no jump. So, sometimes there are other reasons than losing.

It's not like they die when they lose the match, so I don't see it as a problem. people might have picked the wrong character on accident then you just wrecked them with your main, if they leave the lobby they might have had something to do.

Considering that it's way harder to 0-death someone in smash 4, if you actually took that first stock in 10 seconds of the match starting with a pure beat down, why would they wanna stay? They're not learning anything because they don't even know what went wrong in the first place, and you certainly aren't learning anything trying to use them as a punching bag.

I mean, between wasting a few minutes being miserable and playing ultra defensively just to make some guy who's beating me happy and leaving instantly, I'll take leaving.

Yeah don't SD if you're losing that bad. Disconnect. That way they don't know if you did it on purpose or not.

I SD'd on purpose yesterday because my battery was about to die and I didn't want to get a 10 minute ban when I get back on. The player was doing good though up until that point so fair play to him/her regardless.

I have had a ton of times where players SD as soon as they see I'm sporting Rosalina, though. And others who do so when I easily take their first stock with her.

And earlier today, a guy SD'd after a ton of matches but taunted as soon as the match started as if to say good bye, so I assume he/she just had to go. I was able to stop my approach in time though, and "wave" good bye back without interrupting them. We had a ton of good games so it was pretty cool to end off like that.

Oh yes, seeing Rosalina sometimes demoralizes me, though i personally wouldn't do that, since i think i must learn from my mistakes. But seriously out of 400+ For Glory matches, i haven't once defeated an at least decent Rosalina player.

This is kind of off topic, but one time I was lagging really badly, so I SD'd to end the match (I was at 2 stock). When I got spawned back in, all the lag was gone, and it was smooth as could be. Is this some kind of glitch? Has anyone had similar experiences?

Playing on my friends 3DS at work, I had the most silly experience. The match started and it was running at like 4 fps. About 15 seconds in, it switched to normal speed and all my inputs registered at like max speed. I literally held up the 3DS and showed everyone at work "I'm not even pressing anything" as they watched my character attack and jump toward the opponent for the next 10 seconds

online is lol

I have respect SD'd before after someone did something amazing and I was like WOOOOOW you can have the win. I don't have any other way to express that than slowly walking off the stage.

So true....I'm tired of fighting against the characters considered to be the best and just see them all do the same annoying/cheap tactics to win. People just want to do whatever it takes to win no matter how cheap it is without ever using any actual skill.

If it's just a game why is it such a big deal if someone does SD?

I personally don't SD unless the lag is absolutely unbearable, but I just wanna give something to think about. There is a very good point to be made that maybe we're making a mountain out of an anthill.

how come i never notice this thread? i have several videos already of people just SD`ing their last stock, i dont feel like im being complimented, i just feel otherly confused, like Why? is the connection that bad for them? do they have to go quickly? did i just dismotivated them to even keep trying?

which ever their intentions, i am one that never likes to give up, i really dont care how hopeless my victory may seem, if lets say i lost a stock to a really good player, yes i may get salty and mad but i stay on fight and try to win, at least the decency to take out one of their stock, if i cant even do that, then i just wonder what i do wrong and how i can improve, other than that, i will forever just watch them walk off the stage and SD while i strike a pose...or crouch to just go "awww D:"

I only SD if the lag is messing me up a lot, for me is not over until is actually over, even in situations when Im losing by one complete stock. SDing for me feels like not taking the battle seriously and insulting my opponent.

This thread reeks of pretention, really. I highly doubt most people here are being completely forthcoming, but whatever.

There, I have your attention, now.

SDing out of matches that have unbearable lag is a given. I've had moments where atrocious lag struck hard mid-match, and I've ended up SDing, even if I had a stock-lead.

I also SD against opponents who've very obviously accidentally SDed themselves, as to "start over." We exchange taunts as acknowledgements or expression of respect/gratitude, and move on with the match.

I'm quite salty at Rosaluma. I keep telling myself that I'll taunt + SD against every Rosaluma I see, just to piss them off with the hope that others always SD against them, but I always find myself itching for the challenge come game time and end up fighting. Regardless of the outcome of that first match, I check to see if my opponent has switched characters on the character selection screen, and if they haven't, I drop out.

I notice the pattern. In games without much lag, if I destroy the enemy first stock without taking much damage, there is a chance they will just walk around like a level 1 com, or SD.

I hate it when people SD because I SD'ed at low damage. It is stupid. If they do that and I own them I always taunt them extra hard with repeated uptilts if I am R.O.B. and with teabagging or something characters specific if I another character.
