Well, esspecailly in the case of Project M now, it's still possible, otherwise we all wouldn't be here. There's a link that someone can provide you that will give you the Hackless version of Project M with the patch that will let you connect with a custom server.I have a wii but not a wii U or dolphin. It says your friend code is invalid, have downloaded the Wiimmfi private server for wii because the normal Wii wifi was discontinued

I downloaded the wiimmfi code set posted on the last page (427) is there something else needed?

When you go onto Wifi you need a new friend code so you have to delete your old brawl save and either download the 100% completion and transfer it or if you don't care just start a new one when you start up wifi. Also you need to use Homebrew I think for the wifi to work I'm not sure I'll link you the guide
