hey guys. i'm a snake player and i would like to say i'm an above average one. i have a friend who uses olimar and i can hold my own well and beat him but whenever i dash attack to approach him, the majority of the time he grabs me with olimar's crazy grab range. when i stay back and nikita/grenade, he pikmin spams and destroys my explosives, but sometimes the nikita gets through. my situation is is there a better way to approach olimar? better way to camp? what am i doing wrong?

thanks in advance for the advice :)

With Olimar, you have to keep your distance more than with most other characters. Those Pikmin can really screw you over. Grenades are good, and as is per usual, shield-drop and cooking are very useful. I tend to stay away from the Nikitas when fighting Olimar since he deflects them so easily and it leaves you stationary. Also, don't get in too close, since Olimar is surprisingly good up close. C4 is useful too, especially since the explosion can take out some of his Pikmin in the blast. The most important thing is to stay out of range of his Pikmin, because they can be really painful. Also, stay away from laggy moves like Fsmash and Fair. Try and keep moving. But you'll be in for a tough match regardless.

yeah, i've noticed that olimar can be a pain and playing on final destination, smashville, and other small stages only make it harder. thanks for the advice ill try spacing myself more and stop trying to use the nikita.

wow, i take a complete different approach with fighting olimar.

pressure him up close, because your close combat potential is a lot greater then olimar. it also kills many of his pikmin, so he has very little time to get more.

staying out of range? tell me how that will work, his pikmin does insane damage when they attach onto you. you can be at 0% -> 50% in about 5 seconds if he spams pikmin onto you, horrible idea to stay far imo.

I agree with Ultima. With you pressuring him all the time, he has less chances to constantly pull up his pikmin. If I were you I'd be all up in his face the whole match unless it's really necessary to keep your distance. Plus, edge-guarding Olimar isn't that hard of a task with his bad recovery. Imo if you pressure him enough, he'll have one hell of a time working on pikmin strats.

I agree that you have to pressure him but you have to create an opening for yourself. Sometimes against very defensive Olimars that is difficult to do because they won't be reckless in using their pikmin.

also...look here: http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=158037 <---- my own strat of dealing with Olimar, take it into consideration or not, but it works for me.

also I think it's common sense that when you've got a pikmin-less Olimar you have to start opening a can of **** on him.

I think it depends on how agressive the Olimar you fight is. I've fought some really defensive Olimar's, making approaching very difficult. I just end up countering it by constantly moving and keeping as far out of range as possible. I go in close when I can, but I'm basically saying that rushing isn't going to work too well.

Yeah I guess that's true rusty. Perhaps you should approach Olimar with a compromise of the 2 :p. Or just think more about your next move quickly and carefully. You gotta play smart with good Olimars >.>

By the way, Shielding pikmin thrown at you will cause them to just land on the ground instead of latching onto you. Nice eh?

i use olimar a lot and a bit snake, and I can tell you that u should not play too defensive. Of course I am talking about 80% of the time. That is because a good olimar, at least me, arrange his pikmins. Unless u have a plan, never just let olimar organize his "ideal" groups. The BEST way to beat him is realize what color pikmin does. For instance, if u see a purple is the first in line, 90% the guy wont throw it at u. (purple is heavy)

P.S. I am here because I am thinking to main sneak instead :p

This is the same stragey I use with anyone who melle attacks. Set traps and let them come to you. With Olimar this can be a bit of a problem cause the little dastard has a werid hitbox and range. Use the landmine whenever possible. With C4 you have to be pressured to push the button at the right time and good Olimars wont give you time to think. Landmine goes off on its own saving you the brain power. Just trie to remebr were you put the **** thing. I agree with whoever said to not use the missles. To...slow.

Actually now that I think about it you can sorta tell what an Olimar has planned to do if you observe his pikmin line...I play Olimar once in a while but I didn't wanna say this right out to screw over other Olimars XD. Oh well haha.

For example, if he's got a blue pikmin and you're at a high percent, avoid him like the plague. Blue pikmin + back throw at 110%+ = dead. No joke. They have extra grab range too. Red and purple ones are deadly in close combat (these are the ones he'll usually use to KO with smashes, and red ones can meteor), yellow ones have deceptive range and are often used for aerials i.e. fair/bair, white ones can't bludgeon to save their lives and are most likely going to be thrown for some pretty nice damage over time.

This is not flawless obviously, no one plays like these exact actions, but you've got a general idea to work with so you won't be too clueless.
