Sorry to be such a noob, but how does priority actually work in smash 64? What factors go into having priority, and which characters/moves have the highest and lowest priority? I can't find anything on this subject at all, except vague statements like "[character] has high priority." Please explain priority to this noob.

Priority exists on the ground: you can only see that from clashes, where both characters recoil. Even then, that's one of the only real cases of priority.

Past that, it's all about whose hitbox extends into whose hurtbox first. If two characters hit each other at the same time, they both go flying.

disproving determinism
Priority is all about range, ie how far an attack's hitbox is from its hurtbox. In many cases though this is not what you would expect since a bunch of moves will make part of the body invincible (no hurtbox). See the hitbox thread for examples.

In the air if two players have their moves touch the opponents hurtbox they will both be hit. On the ground, if two hitboxes collide there is (usually) a clank.

Lol. I think i know how the OP is feeling. how many times did you look at an attack "beating" another attack in this game when you first started playing and say to yourself "that made no freaking logical sense whatsoever!"

One of my favorites is when ness utilts. he throws these dinky little hands up and they are somehow powerful enough to send a 500 pound ape (DK) that is barrelling towards him flying several feet into the air. From an engineering perspective, he could probably lift airplanes with relative ease.

And that's why this game is awesome.

lol @ trying to put physics in this game.

Captain Falcon, for example, can jump ~12 feet into the air, do a complete flip while kicking, jump another twelve feet (he hasn't touched the ground yet) do another such kick, and then jump again, attracting his foes to his chest with some kind of magnetic force and then exploding them away in such a way that they go flying. If he misses with his final jump, though, he simply falls to the ground, where he is uninjured. He cannot kick on the way down, but he can mystically fall twice as fast.

Oh, and how about the move where he grabs them and throws them so hard that they bounce? I tried that on my girlfriend the other day. It doesn't work.

and don't forget that as a character is beaten, burned and electrocuted enough, they start flying farther when they get hit. try that sometime: take a chainsaw to someone and then punch them. Do they go farther? if you hit them with, say, an uppercut, do they go high enough that they dissapear and you can see them falling into the distance, presumably several miles away?

you should be nicer to your girlfriend, but ignoring that...the most surprising part (beside the second and third ****ing jump in the air that makes no phisicall sense) is that after you sent you opponent miles away or made him explote in the limits of the-platform, stage, galaxy, universe?? what the **** is that??- he re appears in a freeking magic platform being invincible for a couple of seconds...just to try to beat the hell out of you

why do they fight anyway?...why cant they just get along?....it will be nice to see capitan falcon, link and jigly smoking pot and listening john lenon in dreamland...

link-doood, that ****in tree has a ****ing face!!!
jigly-jigly?

Except for a few rare exceptions, there's no such thing as priority in Smash 64. It's mostly just hitboxes and hurtboxes.
I'm pretty sure priority is for a ground attack vs a ground attack, as well as some projectiles.
Aerials vs another attack is hitboxes and hurtboxes though.

I think I read somewhere that ground priority works like this: if the two moves deal within 10% of each other, they clash. If they deal more than a 10% difference, then the stronger move goes through the weaker move. For projectiles vs ground attack I'm guessing it's the same (other than lasers lol), and for aerial vs projectile I think the aerial always cancels the projectile if the hitbox hits the projectile before it reaches the hurtbox.

it is not a tower, it is a rook, and he could if it was empty :p
though knights could be thought of representing platoons.
