Priority

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I have a question. My friends and I have been arguing if there is a such thing as priority or not. So here is what i tried to explain to him:

He said that priority doesn't exist due to hit boxes and frames. I told him that if i was to play with falco or fox and do their up tilt after somebody (for instance ganon does any one of his moves) my move has priority over his b/c it hits first) I may be wrong, but i need your opinion


What do you guys think is priority?

I know priority is basically the strength of one move over another. If two moves on the ground have equal priority, they will just clang off each other. In the air you would hit each other. If a move has more priority, it will go through the other move. Essentially, the stronger move wins.

Well ask your friend what happens when two hit boxes collide at the same time? Answer: Priority. Priority is a bunch of factors including disjointed hitboxes, range, and speed of a move.

KoJ described it pretty well but I think strength is an awkward term for priority because low damage moves can still have high priority.

Priority does have to do with hitboxes, but it also has to do with the power of the. It's both factors. Doc's fair, for example, is virtually identical to mario's fsmash(except for knockback of course )
yet docs will always beat mario's. Its priority. Also Samus's Fsmash will out prioritize her ftilt, which has much longer range. If her smash hits her foot while ftilting, the ftilting samus will be severely punished
