A Matchup-Thread serves the purpose of the mains of the character to discuss what the advantages and disadvantages of their character towards any other one are.
They normally consult the character boards of their current topic (in this case the Ike mains contact the Bowser boards as they are discussing the big turtle), so they have people knowing the character bringing up new arguments and debunking wrong information (for Bowser it's usually that he's slow). Also MU threads include recommendations of stage picks and bans.
