You'll have to forgive me if my first post comes off a tad strange (I was around for the Melee speculations, but was alot more active for the Brawl reveals and leaks on other sites) but just hear me out on this, what if the Wii U version includes the ability for five player matches? I have two reasons to speculate this, the first being the addition of the wii u gamepad, allowing it and 4 other controllers to be used at the same time, and the second is that every time I watch the Mega Man trailer the part of him using Flame Burst an having Mario, DK, Kirby, and Link, seems like a subtle hint to five player matches. And I'd like to keep this purely Wii U based at the time, since im unsure what limitations the 3DS would have on such a thing.

Yeah I noticed that too. Maybe it's just a part of the CGI movie? Then again, the Wii U can support 5 players with one person having the gamepad and the others use the other controllers available and I think the 3DS can too. We will have to wait and see until Sakurai gives confirmation about that.

I really hope so. It'd be great for this game to get another player around.

Why stop at 5? How about 40+ so the entire roster can duke it out at the same time?

Seriously though 4 player matches have always been the staple of the Smash series. In this case I don't see how more = better.

I've already hear people speculating that there could be levels where the wii u gamepad player could do things with the stage just for fun, this could be curious and maybe fun I admit.

You know what, the same thing came to my mind.

Its not entirely out of the realm of possibility, I think the finished product of Melee/Brawl nullified that feature due to certain restraints, whether it be hardware or software.

You'd need to think of how the stages need to change to accommodate the decreasing space. Certain aspects of processing will need to be managed by some slick code to compensate for all the mayhem that goes on in a match (6 sets of Ice Climbers...wow).

Folks hardly talk about how the Pro Controller has 2 front USB ports. I mean, I don't own a Wii U, so I'm not sure how exactly that's handled, all I'm saying is that 5-6 Players can happen due to how many ports are available.

I mean hey 40 might be a bit hectic, but if thats what you want :p Seriously though just an observation more being better or worse is in the eye of the beholder. Personally I've got a bunch of friends who I can see getting a kick out of me laying the butt whooping on them, 4 at a time :D

I don't see it is a bad thing, but I also don't see how adding another character slot for matches would benefit the game. I mean sure, more people can play at a time, but I think Sakurai will stick with the 4 character matches from previous smash installments due to the fact that the game is already pretty hectic.

If the Nintendogs stage was on Wii U i could see the gamepad player interacting with the dog and distracting it via the screen. Or maybe a stage where its like DKCR where the gamepad player has access to disruptive items like the cannons and a tital wave of sorts. Would shake things up a bit and with the inclusion of WFT seems like Sakurai intends to.

If I remember correctly Sakurai also stated that he wouldn't be giving the Wii U gamepad special features as opposed to the other control options for an even playing ground.

5 Players sounds fun. In theory. In practice it might not be...well, practical.

That could be interpreted as saying that if theres for example a player playing as mario on the gamepad, they wouldnt be able to have any special functions, but what about if its a standalone person, not tied to a character fighting, just controlling the stage. Sort of like a special mode, that can be chosen separate of a regular smash match?
