Pokemon Gold MC's name

Recently I've run into this problem on the internet of what the MC's real name in Pokemon Gold (and I guess Silver) is. Gold, or Ethan?

I personally go with Gold, because that was his #1 default name in the original Gold. But apparently everyone else thinks it's Ethan because of Heart Gold and Soul Silver.

What is your opinion on this?

It USED to be Gold, but they retconned it to Ethan

The female is Lyra, and may or may not be the same character as Kris

I just can't accept Ethan

It is frustrating that they would just change his name like that. They could have used one of his other original default names, Ethan seemed like it came out of nowhere.

Regardless of your ability to accept the truth, the canocially accepted name is Ethan. Gold or Heart are unofficial names.

You can call him whatever you so choose.
