Magikarp is Pokemon #129 of the total 649 known Pokemon (which will soon be an even larger number because of Pokemon X and Pokemon Y). Magikarp is best known for his inherent lack of ability to do basically anything. At level 20 he evolves into Gyarados, a Pokemon that blows Magikarp and his splashing right out of the water (pun intended). THIS IS A LEGITIMATE THREAD FOR A JOKE CHARACTER! PLEASE DONT LOCK!

Magikarp wildly flails about in random directions harming anyone who comes into contact with him.

B Up - Bounce
Can be learned by tutoring in the generation 5 games. Magikarp bounces high into the sky damaging anyone who gets in his way.

B Across - Hydro Pump
Is known by a special Japanese event Magikarp. Magikarp shoots a powerful blast of water out of his mouth.

B Down - Splash
Magikarp used Splash. But nothing happened!

Final Smash - Evolution
Magikarp evolved into Gyarados! Magikarp will remain as Gyardos until he's defeated or the match ends.

Stage Entry
Magikarp will be unleashed from a Pokeball by a man holding a 'For Sale 500' sign.

Gyarados's moveset

B Neutral - Hyper Beam
Hold B to charge Gyarados's Hyper Beam and release to fire. Similar to Samus's charge beam attack.

B Up - Waterfall
Same as Squirtle's Waterfall, but more powerful

B Across - Surf
Gyarados will briefly ride across the screen on a huge wave damaging anyone in its path.

B - Down - Twister
Gyarados will summon a twister that'll quickly fly across the screen.

Final Smash - Dragon Dance
Gyarados will perform a bizarre dance and will then briefly become twice as fast and powerful.

He's extremely well-known though. Since the Pokemon anime is broadcast all over the world, he is one of the most iconic pokemon.

Okay, I'll bite. The only thing popular about Magikarp is that it's dead weight until it becomes a Gyarados.

I'd say Magikarp is one of the most iconic Pokemon regardless of the anime. Everyone who's played Pokemon remembers that useless little fish which is the only thing you can catch with the Old Rod, that can't do anything, but then evolves into the ridiculously cool and uber Gyarados. Magikarp is also one of the very few Pokemon that continues to be relevant from generation to generation with it always being catchable with the Old Rod (with the exception of the Unova games which bring back the memorable Magikarp Salesman).

Kikwi-Kiwi - I actually did the exact same thing. Found a shiny Magikarp while hunting for Feebas in Diamond. Thing is, I skipped 2nd and 3rd gen when they first came out, so I didn't even know you could get a shiny Gyarados in Johto D:

Anyways. Yes. I fully support Magikarp for Sm4sh. The real question is, how could they possibly nerf him enough to prevent him from becoming game breaking while still keeping it even remotely accurate?

I liked your original moveset (with some additions):

Neutral a: Splash
Forward tilt a: Splash
Up tilt: Splash
Down tilt: Splash

Neutral b: Special splash
Side b: Sideward special Splash
Down b: Special downward Splash
Up b: Upward splash

Neutral air: Air splash
Forward air: Sideward air splash
Down air: Downward air splash
Back air: Backward air splash

Side smash: Slower splash
Up smash: Slow upper splash
Down smash: Slow downard splash

Final Splash: Evolves into Gyarados


The only problem with this moveset is that splash generally has "No effect!" (Gen I) or use you splash "But nothing happens!" (Gen II-III).

What makes up for this is that when Magikarp uses splash on a Splashball, he instantly evolves into the gargantuan Gyarados.
This is by far the best final splash in the game at an attempt to balance Magikarps' infective standard game.
Gyarados is a ginormous character several times larger than Charizard with extremely powerful thunderous attacks.

He does not devolve into Magikarp unless he is killed.
This makes his final splash transformation last alot longer than Bowsers for example. Gyarados can only die by accruing a certain amount of damage (possibly around 500%).
(Someone else may feel free to create a Gyarados moveset).



Magikarp would obviously be a joke character, but this is not a joke thread.
Sakurai likes the idea of joke characters and this is why Magikarp is a plausible addition to the SSB4 lineup. Show your support!

Magikarp can not hold items.

However an ability unique to Magikarp, a trait that no other character in the game has is that instead of picking up items... magikarp can splash them.
(But unfortunately it has no effect).

Yeahhh, me too. It's just that this is the name I use for everything and is my Wii name (and therefore will be my SSB4 online play name).
