OK, I heard of flavor shuffling before, but never got an explanation. What is flavor shuffling?

Making last minute alterations with your abilities or votes minutes before the phase shift.

I think I was the one who actually coined it a "flavor shuffle."

I've always been a bit of a fan of the maneuver, so I can offer a bit of historical perspective.

The flavor shuffle is by now a long-established and storied tradition in the NZMGC.

However, I was by no means its first user, nor was it termed that the first time I saw it occur. Which, to my memory, was In Opo's FEHMafia.

There'd been some last minute voting shenanigans on day four, you see, which I think all things considered Opo was taking rather well:

And as you might expect from my trickstery demeanor this tickled me greatly.

And of course there was the situation on day six...

Aaaand the post is ready, assuming nothing changes in the next nineteen minutes.

...which went exactly as one might expect.

Though that tickled me far less.

But by now a precedent had been set.

A precedent which I took with me into White's Animafia, where I decided to use the technique to my advantage on night two, dropping Uni at the last moment before anyone could react:

Hey Uni.

Guess what I'm casting.

A move which had a handful of mostly expected consequences.

Ok, who was Beerus and just Hakai'd the whole game?

Probably a side effect of my very favorite thing to make Mafia hosts do.

Rewrite the flavor at the last second.

Later that game, near the end of day four, things got very tense for me. One of my abilities had confirmed that Opo was the Cop, but simultaneously prevented me from discussing it. Opo was slated to be lynched, but I had a Dayvig kill available. This led to a toss-up haymaker between Zeb and Apollo at literally the last possible second.

The aftermath of my decision -

Ah ****.

- is a tale for another day.

Regardless, the resultant delay led directly to both my first known usage of the term:

White, this flavor text better be long, what could take so long?

Same thing it is every time, Pinky.

He's doing the Flavor Shuffle.

And the GIF that typically now accompanies it:

It's remained in my lexicon particularly ever since.

I suppose most of that dances around the actual reasoning behind it, though, so let's throw that out.

From a host perspective - maybe not me, because I'm a notorious procrastinator, but most hosts - our ability to see everything lets us understand how things are on track to happen, and we've got the phase change flavor written well in advance.

When, as @Shishœ noted, some spanner-ass throws themselves in the works with a last-second vote or ability, we've got to rewrite the flavor.

The term itself is probably more influenced by the shell game gifs I use to denote such results, as I like taunting hosts almost as much as I like flavor shuffles.

Dawn broke across Isle Abeens, and Mohn's raft made landfall. Already there was a sense of something amiss as Meowth and Pikachu disembarked.

At a signal, Mohn released the waiting Tyranitar from his ball to join the others with a disinterested huff. And as Mohn, his job complete, piloted the raft back home alone, Meowth began to survey for anything that would explain his sense of unease.

Mixed in with the usual signs of nighttime activity were violent, telltale marks of a scuffle. No, Meowth thought as they surveyed, several scuffles. Their heart quickened, and they made to follow the first trail with the others in pursuit.

Nestled against the tree were the remains of a marked Poké Ball.

Spoiler: “Kirby Dragons”

“Not only does it perceive auras, but it has also gained the power to control them. It employs them in battle.”

Counter: Protects a player at night once and kills attacker


Foresight: you can watch another player once in the game, and learn if they used an ability on another player.


Comes up as clean

KirbyDragons was KO'd and released. His alignment was TOWN.

Meowth's heart sank, a mix of confusion and despair. It was then that Pikachu caught something out of the corner of his eye - the remains of another ball.

“Seviper shares a generations-long feud with Zangoose. The scars on its body are evidence of vicious battles. This Pokémon attacks using its sword-edged tail.”

Gastro Acid: one time use, if used on zangoose you get 2 votes and they get none, fails otherwise.


Swagger: one time use can negate protection on zangoose, fails if not.


When voting for Zangoose, vote counts for 2


Wins if they outlast Zangoose


Comes up clean

Apollo Justice was KO'd and released. His alignment was TOWN.

Over the next few minutes, as Tyranitar forcibly rounded up the remaining 'mons, despair gave way to a quiet righteous fury. Meowth glared as he addressed the fully-assembled crowd.

You'll notice some of our friends are missing. Someone destroyed their balls last night. We're turning on our own.

The crowd piped up in a panic, but a roar from Tyranitar brought them back to silence. Meowth simply adjusted their shades.

: No more games. Find those responsible. Flush them out. Because I doubt they'll stop.

They crossed their arms. Pikachu readied the clipboard, clicking a pen. The stage was set.

: We have to find them, now, or there'll be none of us left.

Day two has begun. You have 24 hours.

Seviper's role has me extra paranoid now... presuming it is real. In another life time I might know about forging connected roles to try and pass the other off as a fake claim. >___>

Although it, and Kirby's Lucario role continues the narrative that everyone's roles are incredibly weak and hard to prove... this game is really going to trigger me.

Ledian has two powers. The first is Substitute. This is a one shot bulletproof. The other ability is Baton Pass, which lets me pass the Substitute to someone else, but I lose it.

Simple.

...But I found a major loophole.

Last night I had Shiny link me to Lampy. Whatever happened to Lampy, happened to me. I gave Lampy my Substitute. Lampy received a Substitute, and because of that, I received one too.

So I found a loophole that allowed me to make more Substitutes. Doctor, please protect me tonight. That way I can continue acting as a Substitute giver-outer, and whoever I am linked to is also protected.

Anyway, now that Opo has revealed how much of a cheater he is (), I feel safe sharing my own role.

But before I do that, I wonder if anyone caught up on the hinting that I did. It's somewhat subtle (until about 10 minutes ago where I basically just outed it ), but not obnoxious like Opo's "denial" anagram thing.

I figure it would be for the best if I came clean myself.

Seviper's death was my doing. Not the Mafia's, mine.
For those of who I talked to and shared my role(s), there was one role I was keeping hidden from everyone.
Sneaky Pebbles. (Stealth Rock)

When Apollo was being secretive and claiming to be part of a plan to prove his role after I was already told he was Seviper by Lampy, I got worried that this was another Xander/Ryoma situation and banked on Seviper being the scum between the two.
So I used Stealth Rocks on him. Which meant if he used any role in the Night (which I assumed would be a kill or poison or some other malicious role) or today, the stones would get him. Wasn't counting on all of his roles being literally "negatively affect Zangoose and do nothing to anyone else". My bad.

That being said, @Lampy
I won't vote for you because your lynch would mean Opo gets lynched too this phase, but I need you to somehow prove you aren't the "Xander" side of this relationship and that you and Apollo were BOTH Town.

During my outing yesterday, in Target, I came across this little outdoor furniture display. A little pergola, with the top ringed by a string of lights, covering a table and chairs.

I imagine that'd be nice for a midnight chat on Isle Abeens.

Wistful thinking.
