Fee:
$10 Singles ($6 for pot)
$12 per Team ($10 for pot)
$6 per crew (5 for pot)
That was the original fee and pot split from when i posted the info about three weeks ago.

Entry:
$10 Singles ($5 for pot)
$12 per Team ($6 for pot)
This is the new info.

Why is it that only 5 dollars goes to the pot? also 6 dollars goes to the pot for doubles only? WTf? So that means you guys get 6 dollars per team? wow, this is pretty outrageous.

Tournament venue fees have been getting more and more expensive lately. Tournament hosts are just being greedy nowadays. I remember when there used to be tournaments that didn't even have a venue fee. Now, not only are there venue fees, but there are separate venue fees for each event, singles and doubles. Any venue fee that totals more that 2 dollars is just too much. Smash has become way too expensive.

The recent hike in tournament prices is one of the reasons that I don't usually enter doubles. If I don't enter doubles, then I only have to pay one venue fee. :)

This particular tourney is actually giving out pot split, but the way it seems the store keeps 50% of the pot and the other 50% will be divided into the usual 60%,30%,10% split.

Please all keep in mind that when tournaments this big happen in stores, we have to utilize all stations making it impossible for people to try games and employees to sell products. Also the amount of people in the store during the tournament will turn customers away due to crowding and therefore the store will make less sales during the day. Our tournament partners for the event are expecting around 100 participants which means the total pot for singles will be 500 dollars CASH. 1st place gets 300 CASH which is 225 dollars more than our normal tournament (store credit) payout. Sorry for trying to give out bigger payouts. We will keep this in mind for future tournaments.

Those are all valid points, although that's the negative to hosting a tourney in a retail store. The people that enter should not have to pay up the ***, just because the store is going to lose a few bucks in the process. Making the environment for the smashers better is just another way of selling or advertising because in the future people will remember that store were they played at that smash tourney and guess what you just got yourself a long time customer.

All im saying is the venue fee is ridiculous and should be lowered dramatically.

There will be an influx in the number of costumers at your store because more and more people will want to see what the big crowd is about.

so there's more people in the store that wouldn't normally be there (this isn't even including the people in the tournament)

the new people at the store look at some of the merchandise while they're in there.

they buy it.

how are you losing money? i bet you'll be making more money off the random people who come in that see the large crowd then the people who won't buy their goods because they're turned away from it.

you say you're expecting 100ish participants?

lets do some math...

100 ppl x $11 in venue fee = $1,100 (you can argue that they may not enter doubles, but i'll aruge that you may get more than 100 people)

so $1,100, which you're saying is justified because you'll be "losing" money from costumers who will be turned off.

i really doubt you're going to lose $1,100 in merchandise, unless you're telling me about 20 people are going to decide "i'm not gonna buy my game here because there are other people." (it's not like the smashers are at the register, lmao.)

Anyway, Tournament hosts need to stop acting like their venue fee is justified, and just admit that they're ripping people off, it's nothing to be ashamed of, you're a business, just stop trying to justify it with bull****.

edit: and wtf are you trying to argue by saying you're giving cash out now? that doesn't even effect you considering YOU'RE USING POT MONEY FOR THE PRIZES, YOU'RE NOT DISHING OUT ANY. ALL THE MONEY YOU MAKE IS PROFIT.

please tell me you're not the manager lmao.

The entry fees and amount towards the pot was decided and set by our owners and the our other tournament partner. It cannot be negotiated. And we are not trying to rip you off.

I apologize for any onconveniences this may cause you. Since it seems that this is upsetting many people, we will just go back to store credit prizes.

The thing is it shouldn't be about making up the money you lose. It's about the love for the game and playing other people. Are you just running these tournaments to make a quick buck?

I don't mind venue fees if all of the money actually goes to the venue. A dollar or two at someones house is sometimes acceptable...

I get that but they don't seem to understand what we look for in a tournament and what they look for in a tournament.

Yay store credit! Definitely would go to Play n Trade, since I am totally going because standing up, laggy TVs, completely bull**** entry fees, and a video game store as a venue are GREAT additions to tournaments! Not because I want to support Melee at all!

Oh wait it's brawl. LOL why is this thread here

I hope every play n trade realizes that nobody goes to their tournaments because they are actually any good at all. They only go because they think they have a chance at winning a ****ty tournament that nobody good would waste their time with. Or they don't want to travel to a better one.

EDIT - Just for clarification, I don't care that you're charging a venue fee. If you take the effort to host a tournament you should be compromised. Your tournaments are just really bad.

Sheesh take it easy guys.
People do go to their tournaments; that's why the Mission Viejo PlayNTrade has had 3 or 4 for Brawl this year. And those who do go are friendly and fun to play with. I had a great time at the last one even though I didn't play very much. The tournament runs smoothly and the staff is very chill. I've made a few buddies at these tourneys also. Getting the local smash community together to have fun is what matters to me, and they've done very well in that respect.

I agree that the fees are pretty high this time around, but seriously, give them some credit. I'd like to thank MV PnT for being good hosts for smashers this year. Unfortunately I can't make this upcoming tournament, but I'll be at the next one if you guys decide to host it.

LOL yeah, he's just happy there's a tournament closer than 10 minutes from him.

They have 3 or 4 because they make money (there's nothing wrong with that). The last one I went to, I met one kid who was pretty cool (Spam), but there was a mom who would annoyingly insist we allow her daughter to win... lol P camped her HAHAHAH man that was awesome. Anyway, yeah that's good they add more to the community, too bad none of them go further than their local video game store to support the community that they are supposedly a part of. And they're all 13.

Good hosts? They don't have the rules straight (I saw people picking Hyrule Temple, that stage is like incest for smashers... well most smashers), there are laggy TVs, there are no chairs, I mean why would anyone pick this over a recognized host like Race for example (who only charges a $1 venue fee to use the entire house including bathrooms). Even Quizno's gets their **** straight, NO JOHNS *****

yeah, if you were providing a great venue, then these fees would be KIND OF justified... but come on, you're obviously just trying to get as much money as you can, and when we call you out on your bull****, you should probably just not bother responding to it.

i mean seriously, how can you charge such exorbitant venue fees but have laggy TVs and make players stand up?

I will keep in mind that you are just trying to make a few extra bucks on the side and not actually trying to hold a tournament with any validity.

Good job on giving out cash prizes though, Shuffle and Cut beat you to that by almost two years. Even pride is worth more than your store credit, which is why I still haven't used the winnings I made from the Irvine location. And why I show up baked.

I personally give them credit for actually hosting a tournament in the 949 area, because there are NO tournaments here. My car is a piece of **** and I doubt it gets more than 24 mpg right now so I don't usually drive very far for tourneys. PnT MV is only 15 mins away from my house so I appreciate that they host it.

I've only gotten into the Smash tournament scene this year with Brawl, so my opinion of a good tournament is going to be pretty n00b compared to most people here. x[
But I'm tryin' to get rides to tourneys now and go out of the area to play. It's whatcha gotta do; I'll be at Quizno's... :0

So they got lucky they are located in your area. Props to them.

And non-sarcastic props to you, ArdeS, for going to more tournaments despite your situation. Although mine gets 17 mpg =P But it's pretty sweet I appreciate it a lot.

My parents might be getting me an '08 Mazda3 soon. 26 MPGs FTW! :]
I have to help pay for it though. D:

Thinking about it now, I believe I was there when that mom kept asking the PnT guys to let her child continue. I was laughing my *** off. xD

Nah totally opposite, when customers come in they can't look at ****. Well atleast that was the case for out store when tournaments when on. Why? Because alot of people are inconsiderate, they lean on the shelves and don't move for people blocking thier access to looking at a game. If a smasher was playing yet blocking the 360 section, he'll be too distracted to notice. And well who is going to wait, and so the customer decides to leave.

This is a pretty nice venue, very large, well circulated, and the staff are very friendly.

I mean first they give credit out and they get heat for it, then they give out cash but keep a little for themselves and the same thing happens. You guys want them to dish out the whole thing, ok thaat is of course alot better, but what is the incentive to having everyone in there then? Having you guys make a mess? This is a business after all. Just trying to justify what MV is saying since it was the same for us when we ran ours.

Edit: Awww I was hoping that it would start at 2 like normal, because I gotta be at work till 1. Hopefully doubles drags on late. =(

Too bad I wanted to do doubles >.<
