PM Grab release mechanics?

Can anyone tell me how grounded releases and air releases work in PM? I've been working on a few setups from the edge of the stage, but I have no idea whether brawl mechanics are still in play.

This was discussed in a thread somewhere, but I don't remember all the details. I'm pretty sure the optional air release (press jump just before escaping the grab) is still in though.

I googled it, but got nothing. Can you give me a link?

Pretty much are grounded/air releases forced based on character height/feet touching the stage?

The smash wiki feels incomplete. I want to know how the game decides whether you are air release or ground released.

In brawl if you don't pummel and the grabbed chars feet don't touch the ground, they get forced to air release, which is why wario had so many bad things happen.

I want to know whether this is still true (Which I believe not based on playing yesterday) and how a ground release is forced.

The player being released can choose ground or air release by holding up for air release or anything else/nothing for ground release. For most characters, maybe all, neither character will have frame advantage.
In general it's not very good unless you grab a fast faller facing and near the edge and don't have an fthrow/other throw that puts them lower than an air release would.

grab release is a a good idea

if anything it's a statement moreover to the fact that you probably pummeled a good 8 free % on average, and can throw off players/even lead up on ones who are operating on a play faster than mentality basis (spazzy fox players) It doesn't lead up to free attacks like it did in brawl though, aside from on mewtwo unless they fixed that

grab release combos don't really exist in pm. your opponent chooses whether they air (hold/press up or a jump button) or ground release, and the air release has drift and such.

iirc melee had some odd grab release stuff going on that carried over to brawl, like (again iirc) DK having a shorter animation when released and bowser's advantage when releasing characters. did they take that out of PM too? i'm like 99% kill percent sure at least one of those things existed in melee.

yeah in melee DK's I-just-got-released animation was 8 frames shorter, and bowser's I-just-released-somebody animation was 10 frames shorter. They were the only one with oddities in their grab release animations though.

I always hear grab release combos are not really a thing. Does this mean there are some, or is it just something against bad "DI" (how is that horizontal drifting possibility called) and such... I only found grab releases useful for edgeguarding purposes yet, but also that is very situational and not really useful most of the time
