So I was Ganondorf and MooseEatsBear was Falcon, I grabbed him by his TOE somehow.

go to the part with the hitboxes and study them well. those big ol circles probably did work. if he has a hurtbox in the hitbox, he's still gotta get grabbed. i'm more suprised he didnt teleport more directly into your hands until after the throw started.
all in all though, his toe is a hurtbox, and that standing grab hitbox was high enough to grab it, so...it grabbed. it's just like if you jabbed him instead, instead, it just grabbed.
