Are you guys going to use the official players guide for Smash 4? It would be useful to know exactly what all the specials do, and for people who need help unlocking characters? Do you think someone would upload the players guide to Smashboards?

Official guides for fighting games are always a lot less reliable than fanmade guides on the internet. For an example, look at the Brawl tier list in its official guide.

Yeah the Brawl guide was/is a joke haha. I still like to own them as a novelty, and maybe there will be some neat little things to learn from it but all that info is likely to end up on the internet anyway if it really is worth knowing.

Smasboards suck
I mostly buy them to have something to read when on lunch break at work.

I'm don't think I'll get the player's guide. If I need to know something such as how to unlock a certain character I'll just look it up online.

I wasn't aware games like this could have an official guide. Brawl, I guess could because of SSE, but these games aren't really the type of thing you would be stuck on, and could look up a single way past whatever your stuck on. The only solution is to train and get better.

It sort of has to do with unlocking things and techs though. Or even just explanations for what certain specials do, since it isn't always something everyone can just figure out. I actually don't remember what kind of things Brawl's guide had for characters, but something like the meteor effect on Luigi's taunt comes to mind.

Ah, I see. As for what the specials do, I hope they do like they did in Melee, where the trophy for each character explains two of their specials, and you get one trophy from Classic, the other from Adventure, or something kind of similar. That way, you would be forced to play the character at least enough to know if you're interested in them, and if you are, then you get an explanation of how they work.

I did like those trophies, but I did think they were kind of backwards as a teaching tool. "Here's some clarification on the character you've clearly come to know well enough to beat a single player mode!"

I suppose trophies explaining some deeper mechanics or aspects of moves could be cool though. Just don't remember Melee really going all that in-depth with it.

That's a good point... maybe if you clear Classic with a character, or play so many matches with a character, you unlock a special "How to Play" video, like Brawl had, but catered to each character. And instead of just going over their moves, it could detail some useful combos or tricks that character has. Like an in-depth guide on how to efficiently control Luma independently from Rosalina, etc.

That'd be cool. Maybe have one video unlocked per character right from the get-go, but after fulfilling some requirement you unlock an "advanced" set of videos or something.

Yeah, I like this idea. Not only does it add something to do for those that like to unlock everything, but it also encourages people to branch out from their mains and discover new characters, as well as promoting a bit of the advanced/competitive side of Smash.

I wouldn't count on official guide to go into a lot of details, but it would be really nice if frame data was provided for once.

I'll get the guide out of the tradition of it. I have the Melee and Brawl guides to this day just because.

The frame data from the attacks could be provided by the gamepad's screen.
Like, for example, when I use a up tilt with Ness, all frame data about this attack appears at the WiiU pad screen.

I feel like that would be impossible to accurately display without a moving picture...
Not at all. You'd need really just the startup, active, and ending frames along with the period of hitstun and blockstun.

Why buy the guide when you can go to GameFAQs and have everything about the game on there for free? Unless it's as a collector's item, not liking GameFAQs, or just looking at the pictures for reference, not only it'll be outdated but it wouldn't be worth the purchase if it'll be free in a few days/weeks on the Internet.

That's basically it. I like having it just because I like having Smash Bros. players guides, and Gamefaqs is kind of awful a lot of the time.

Yeah, will people at smashboards make the guides quickly? How long would it take?
