Planning an alternate button setup...

Will you be using an alternate button setup? I think I will. I was thinking I wouldn't change anything at first, but then I had a great idea, and it's pretty simple: use a trigger button to jump (i.e. R, L etc.). I've thought about it and I think the pros outweigh the cons. Really, the only thing you lost from this set up is comfort, and even that is merely a temporary loss, though it might be hard to short hop at first since it's so different. Anyway, let's look at the benefits. The one thing that really stands out is that you can have a finger on the jump button and the C-stick/A/B/X/Y at the same time. This made it hard to do aerials immediately after leaving the ground in Melee, but now it will be very possible. I guess that's the only real pro, but it's still pretty big, or at least I think so. But what do you guys think? I'm open for criticism.

I never thought about that. That is genius!

Hmmm...

Well the only problem I can think of is it would probably be really weird with the Gamecube's pressure sensitive trigger buttons. Maybe that will make it easier to short hop though?

Well if it feels too weird, you could always use a classic controller. Use L for jumping, R for shielding, and everything else normal.

My idea was for a gamecube controller setup:

Disable jumping with up on the control pad. Everything else remains the same. I was thinking about using y for grab instead of z, but I will see how it feels when the game comes out.

Although now that you have given me that idea, I might try it out.

Another idea is for the classic controller. Disable jumping with the control pad. The right control pad will be the new c-stick. L for jump. R for shield.

To be honest, a lot of new control ideas might come up after we have played the game. Wait and see............

I would only switch the Z button to the X button for easier access and disable up-jump.

Everything else would remain the same.

I was really considering using the classic controller just because there is less space to cover when pressing R/L.

Actually, I think I'm just going to switch the functions Z and Y. I forgot about Z when I made my post... It's still the same concept but better. I just like thinking about the classic controller because if this game survives for long, I think everyone will eventually be stuck with the classic controller unless they are stocking up on GC controllers.

not bad, not bad.

one thing i've been wondering though is why competitive smashers are so set on exclusively using X to jump. i understand reasons to not use the control stick, and i'll definitely be turning that off in brawl, but what is it about X that makes it so much more popular than Y?

I never thought about the jump being L/R thats not a bad idea.

I was originally just going to replace Z with X

Not a bad idea but it would get on my nerves having to press the triggers that often. I'll be using the standard Cube layout, except I'll change either the left trigger or the spare Jump button to Grab. I hate the Z trigger. If there aren't any new binds then that's all I really want changed.

Spidey - I'm not sure, I use Y myself. I never really tried X, but I still can't imagine it being better.

Zek - I didn't think about that. It might be tiring for your fingers if you're constantly hitting L/R on the GC controller. Plus I think the Z button is one of the more "weaker" buttons, so it will probably wear out fast. This is still remedied by the classic controller, so I don't really have a problem still.

The X button is the same distance from the lower thumb knuckle as A and B, and so to hit them requires the same movement, but at a different angle. It's simpler. You've got to move your finger in an entirely different and potentially unintuitive way to hit Y quickly.

I'm sticking with Y as jump, and Making X as grab because Z alawys seems to turn on my light shield instead of grab... I think it's because the Z button is so awkward idk... and I might disable analog stick jump for easier up airs... using R or L to jump would seem to awkward because of how sensitive they are... It does seem like a smart idea if it works though...

I might try it, got nothing to lose since I never used R anyway.
Could help a lot with shine-cancelling.

Let's see...

I'll disable Tap Jump, not that it's much of a problem. I might move Grab to X, keeping Lightshield on Z if possible.

Everything else will be the same. I might fiddle around with the CC, and just test out the WiiMote and WiiMote/Nunchuk combos.

That's it for me. GameCube FTW.

Changing L to Jump sounds fun, but I plan on using the Wiimote + Nunchuk because I want Brawl to be a completely new experience. And I don't like wires. But I think I'll do the same think with the Wiimote and change the C button to jump

2nd cardboard box to your right
i personally use stick jump every now and then, so that stays.

Also, for players who use the IC's, they could switch the extra jump button to B function, so that when they use moves like >B, they can hit both B buttons for max height?

Just an idea.

I *might* disable tap jump, but it's easy to JC stuff with it, so if I wind up playing characters where that's important, I'll leave it on.

Very true indeed, my controls might not change at all. I might have some plans to change my controls later, but for now all I will do is turn off tap jump (like everyone else). I liked Melee's controls more when I figured out that the C-stick is made for aerials. It makes backwards Fairs and forward Bairs possible, and it does not have any jump involved, so I can do a Dair off the edge without fast falling with a ****ed control stick. I love the C-stick, others should too. It just makes attacks easier :)

The C-stick was my favorite aspect of the controls in Melee, and I think the classic controller is ideal for my set up because it still has the C-stick and it has good trigger buttons. I actually think C-sticking has changed for the better, because now it's like an advanced tech itself since you can't be holding another direction to do a smash attack.
