That being said, I would love for Lucas to be an alternate costume or something. Doubtful, but it would be nice.

Lucas is one of the predominant reasons that I am not entirely convinced that the Sal leak is real. Lucas seems like the more ideal choice; again, Ness is arbitrarily more important. If I recall correctly, Lucas almost replaced him twice. His intent would be antithetical in Smash 4 if Lucas was the one on the chopping block (especially as neither should be considered for omission).

You realize that in the leak which more or less doomed Lucas, the staff actually debated on keeping Lucas OR Ness. I really think we overrate the original 12 status. Ness was to be cut in Melee after all.

Again, I really think you're glazing over this because "Ness is popular". Ness was in as much danger as Lucas was, to the point the team had 'Heated debates' according to this leak.

Not everyone is American. This game isn't tailored for the US, believe it or not there are NTSC-J Smash 4 discs being made. SHOCKING, isn't it?!

To reiterate, "original 12" are only in because they are the staple reps of their series. The only series with two reps was Mario. Being in Smash 64 doesn't magically give someone a free pass to every single Smash game for the rest of the series. is pretty irrelevant now. I really wouldn't be surprised if they cut her/it.

Mother was officially translated into English but never released for an odd reason.
Mother 3 was not translated because it was released around the time the GBA was dying. Had it been released for DS I am certain that it would be given an English translation.

Do you know that it's actually racist to say that Ness is more popular because of his English release?
The Japanese are people too, people who MAKE THIS GAME.
In their eyes the characters that come up when they hear "Mother" are both Lucas AND Ness, and even Ninten.
Both of them together adequately represent the Mother series (1/3 each). It's no use having 45 different series' if each has only one rep.

Lucas is also more relevant to the Mother series, as anyone who has played all three games would know. And the most relevant characters to the series are given the highest priority. Not to say that Ness should just be cut like that, both of them should be in and if only one, then really Lucas should take priority.

Do you know what the Japanese smashers are doing right now?
They are discussing this same topic in their forums. And you can bet you won't hear:
"Ness should be the only one because he had an English release".

tbh at the rate this game is going, both and will be cut and replaced with some ridiculous third party or another unneeded Mario/Zelda/Pokemon rep, probably Bowser Jr. or Tails *shudders*, as Sakurai seems to be listening to public opinion...
It seems like all the retroes are going to be tossed out one by one in favour of luxuries/extras like Pac-Man.
I'm beginning to seriously doubt how much I'm going to be able to enjoy this game with Miis making even more characters rare to come by, half the people I play in Brawl main some iconic character and I never play a good .

The roster is... disappointing atm, and if Sakurai is trying to get hype from me then it's not working. If Pac-Man was put to replace someone like Falcon, or an Earthbound rep. Palutena wasn't a bad choice really, but Mii and Pac-Man?

I just don't think this thread can even be realistic. Respecting the old as well as the new is important but it looks like there's nothing to stop Sakurai cutting Earthbound and F-Zero entirely along with Jigglypuff.

I dunno if ~$500 from me is gonna be worth this really. There's no guarantee that Smash 4 will be close to Melee's gameplay, if anything Smash 4 could be even less competitive than Brawl. Any chance I had of getting a good competitive match on random matchmaking in Wi-Fi is... diminished, to say the least. Right now it seems like Smash 4 is beign tailored to get as much hype (and sales) as possible by slowly chipping at the gameplay. That ~$500 is probably better spent on the Wiimmfi servers, where maybe I can get a good match with no lag.

However, I'd bet my life that some people are going to make a Project M-like hack for SSB4. This atm is the only good use of $500. But bringing that up, it's going to be NTSC only and for all the trouble I went through to install P:M for my PAL Wii (not working)... just...

You are overreacting people. With the Franklin Badge and Mr Saturn in the game it is pretty obvious at least one of the Mother boys will be back. It is very pessimistic to think otherwise, especially if you think the Captain is gone.
Although I am sure one is coming back, it very likely will not be Lucas.
I will still get the game, one character does not make the game for me.

I really liked Lucas's addition in Brawl. I was actually really rooting for him to be in, playing Mother 3 around the time to. So, yeah it'll be a major bummer if he's gone. But it would be worse to lose Ness at this point though. If a sacrifise has to be made, I'd rather pick Lucas over Ness, even if the choice is bad. Am sure hoping Lucas indeed shows up as DLC. And I think a lot of semi-clones actually might become DLC.

Lucas, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Roy, maybe even Dr.Mario very well could end up becoming DLC characters. Mewtwo to, if he's not in. Other semi-clones I think are possibily are Dixie Kong and Lucina.

Doubt this will be the end of Lucas. Am hoping that his DLC character will somehow be coupled with a English-translated Mother 3. Nintendo is reaching out to it's core fans more it seems, having contacted top Smash players. I could see it even possible that they will contact the guys from Starmen.net and translate Mother 3 officially.

You can't be serious about Captain Falcon, with Samurai Goroh confirmed as an assit trophy, we still have Mr. Saturn and the Frankling Badge, there is no evidence the retros are being cut Ice Climbers are very likely, the polar bear is confirmed, just stay positive.

I know there are preferences but not every game must be like Melee, I have played them all, different styles I agree, people just don't like change

The problem is this. It's from the same leaker who predicted at least 7 newcomers. More evidence keeps mounting for even his most questionable claims. I want to remain hopeful for Lucas, but it's getting really hard ...

Don't forget that MOTHER 3 never left Japan (officially at least) so that limits quite some people's acces to it. EarthBound might've been a niche title, but at least it came out in America to for the SNES. It didn't make it to Europe (where I'm from) but it recently got a VC rerelease, and now even Europe can play it.

So, Ness is the most accesable MOTHER character, as well as being the most famous, and popular. He isn't leaving. People are getting majorly upset about the thought of one of the 'original 12' getting cut, they'd even defend Jigglypuff for obvious better characters as Mewtwo.

Mother 3 was released at the end of the GBA, otherwise it would've received a translation. That means the game itself was important enough to get a translation. In terms of limiting access... Well it's the Japanese who make this game, and I heard they're having debates on it.
