I’ve combed through the smaller part of the internet, and from what I’ve seen, there is a lot of support for some kind of Pikmin character. Olimar, Louie, and the colorful gaggle of Pikmin are in high demand.

Brawl is a fighting game. And fighting games generally have some standards for what can become one of their fighting character. The majority of fighters have the standard or criteria of being human or humanoid. This means having arms, legs, body, and head are necessary. Smash has a similar criteria. This is why a Tetris block character wouldn’t fit in smash. What attacks would it have? How would it move around, by infinite spin?
<p align="center"><a href="http://smashboards.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/pikmin1x28x05xghp.jpg" title="pikmin1×28x05xghp.jpg"><img src="http://smashboards.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/pikmin1x28x05xghp.jpg" alt="pikmin1×28x05xghp.jpg" /></a></p>
Olimar fits the criteria, but what about the pikmin? Can we really have another Ice Climbers fiasco?<!--more-->

In Pikmin and Pikmin 2, Olimar is a small figure in a huge foreign world. With the help of his plant friends that he picks from the ground, he conquers his environment. These friends, Pikmin, are smaller than Olimar which brings up the issue of size and proportion. Smash is all about beating each other up. In order to do that, you have to be able to hit your opponents. The bigger they are, the easier it is to hit them. The smaller they are, the harder it is to hit them. In order to make Olimar and friends look right, they have to appear small. So how small is too small in Smash?
<p align="center"> <a href="http://smashboards.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/20041107_pikmin.jpg" title="20041107_pikmin.jpg"><img src="http://smashboards.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/20041107_pikmin.jpg" alt="20041107_pikmin.jpg" /></a></p>
Kirby is supposed to be 8 inches tall. To stay true to this fact, but still make him suitable for Smashing, they gave Kirby the lowest crouch in the game. This allows him to duck under nearly every attack in the game, giving him a “small” feel. Now check out these brawl shots side by side. Is it just me, or are the proportions a little skewed between the three?

Shiek’s needles are the smallest attack/projectile in Melee. They’re small barbs of metal that can hardly be seen especially when the game is zoomed out. No attack should be so small and fast that they’re practically invisible. Brawl seems to understand this concept. Sakurai seems to be making all the moves more obvious and apparent. Link’s sword glows after all.

So if Olimar were a character, I’d say he would be about Kirby’s or Fox’s height. The Pikmin should be Pichu or Peach’s Vegetable size.

Now for possible moves.

Continuing with the concept that B moves define the character and A moves round out their fighting ability, Olimar’s A moves would be a variety of his 1-2-3 puches and other physical attacks. Olimars B  special could be drawing a Pikmin from the ground. Like Peach’s Vegetables, a random pikmin would be drawn that would follow Olimar around. The rest of his B moves would be ways to control the Pikmin. Side+B: Whistle to organize them. Down+B: Red fart to invigorate them. Up+B, throw pikmin. What if certain combinations of pikmin could built bridges and other useful things?

It would be interesting to see if a balance could be created to give the Pikmin a small AI like in their games. The Pikmin could run to locations to morph the level, or attack nearby enemies when left idling on their own.

Yes, I agree it would be a tricky character. I think he could use Pikmin to go get him items and objects, while he fights. He may be equipped with a small ray-gun, with his space history.

And I think we all know what his Final Smash would be, a flood of Pikmen cover the stage and attack everyone.

As far as proportions are concerned, I think if he were about as big as Pichu, it wouldn’t throw things off too much. That is if the Pikmin aren’t attackable. To have Pikmin THAT tiny, (a scale that matches Olimar at Pichu’s size) that you have to try attacking, might be a bit much. Then again, if they aren’t really that fast or powerful, it would be about as difficult as swatting G@W’s bacon out of the air. (Not very.) So yeah, if Sakurai and team can come up with a good/creative idea, I’m sure they can make it work. Good post Kirbykid. One thing I wouldn’t necessarily rule out though, is non-humanoid Poke’mon. I’m no Poke’mon fanatic, but I still think a four-legged fighter like Bulbasaur would be interesting as well as fairly easy to incorporate. Plus he’s just a classic. Leaf throwing, vine grabbing, knee chomping…

If captain Olimar fights captain Olimar, their pikmin must be of a different hue, if he controls pikmin as a move.

It certainly gets very complicated very quickly. It all reminds me of ice climbers.

If you take away the pikmin’s color , then would each player still be able to pluck different kinds of pikmin? Should they just control any pikmin with their whistle.

Just think, 4 Olimars in one match.

Olimar may just be too hard a character to make. However, my sources almost completely confirm a Pikmin reference in the game.
(I, personally have never played either of the pikmin games)

John:
The Ice Climbers are a bundle of crazy. With enough technique you can successfully control both characters at once. This is a little too powerful.

Everyone knows 2 versus 1 is unbalanced. This is what the iceclimbers are in essence.

You can’t even treat them like 2 players against 1 because, one climber doesn’t take away stock when they die. And because they have separate health, they really begin to stretch the boundaries of the game.

What’s worse is they don’t interact with each other. There’s a reason why team attack on is the only way to play teams. But the climbers don’t care.

Fiasco!

hey iv got an idea! what if down B was for picking pikmin (max 10-20 whatever) normal B to throw one pikmin a short distance and ether come back to you (i guess it could bring you an item) or start attacking an enemy until its killed. up B could get all your pikmin to throw you upward as your super jump and side B could make all your pikmin run that way until they fall off the edge or hit an enemy. i mean, it would be drastic, but with 20 pikmin pounding your opponent it would be one heck of an attack! and if the pikmin did nothing but follow your every move and looked cute, there would be no i.c. fiasco! also, i am totally up for the pikmin swarm final smash but what if an onion was involved? also, what if there was no Louie and you determined the team by the coulor of the little helmet light and the pikmin? as a last note what if instead of punches for his A move he hit with his helmet light?
any way, think about it and this is awesome Ivan, signing off!

ps. sorry if this letter is a little long but i don’t get to write very much!
