I figured we should have this thread since there are hardly any threads concerning competitive play.

Can someone try this combo?

i dont know why this thread isn't being used but...i might as well use it seeing as i dont know where else to post this XD.

does anybody else feel like pikachu's been overpowered to the point where he's just a really easy character to pick up and win with(smart dsmash spam ftw?) and it takes almost no skill at all to use him? i've been playing brawl, and while it was fun at first, i realized all i needed to do to win with pikachu was use dsmash to rack up damage and get a thunder set up for a KO. sure, i'd use combos here and there, but does anybody else feel like pika's been overpowered and is nowhere near as fun as he was in melee? not to mention we may suffer what marths did and get a bunch of new people thinking they're innately awesome with pikachu just cuz their opponents don't know how to deal with dsmash spam.

sorry for the long, pessimistic post. i am very biased against brawl, i know, and that's probably my problem.

Play better opponents.
This one.

Ok so I was playing today and I noticed that if you just jab someone one time and stop, they'll trip. I've only tested this on Snake because that's who I was playing but it worked everytime I did it. Reverse thunders ftw?

If this is true then pika may have the single best set up move in the game. I'm not sure why you would want to reverse thunder out of that, though. The thunder's kb isn't THAT great when it hits on the ground except when it actually hits pikachu, and it also has some startup on it. I would think that an up or down smash would be far preferable to land on a tripped opponent.

ok well, i did some testing. i think it has something to do with spacing or maybe they can't be doing anything(ie crouching) while you jab them. or maybe it just greatly increases the chance of tripping. but a lot of times, jab really did make them trip.

Is the jab-trip chance dependent on percentage? I noticed that a lot of characters have attacks that seem to induce tripping, but it seemed to occur more often the higher percentage the target was. I'll look at it some more later tonight. Seems like a pretty vicious setup for an F-Smash if there's a guaranteed way to induce the trip (although I don't know if an F-Smash would sweetspot at the range Pikachu's jab would hit).

lol you don't get it. :p Thunders combo is a Melee term, it used to mean that if a person missed a tech, you jabbing them would make them stand up automatically. This doesn't work in Brawl, what I mean by reverse thunders combo is you jab them and they trip, basically creating the same effect, only reverse. I tried this out in a match today and it actually seems pretty useful, I got off a few jab -> grab combos due to them tripping.

Edit: And as far as I know, this doesn't change based on their percentage. I did it at 0% and at around 80% and it worked just the same both times.

Oh, I get it now that I know what you were talking about. I was a fox player in melee, so I know what a thunders combo is, but I've been calling pika's ability to move backwards while thundering in front of him "reverse thunder," since the thunder appears on the "wrong side" of you compared to your initial momentum, so it was kinda confusing. Now if you had said "reverse thunders combo" I might have known what you were talking about.

Wow I just watched the QAC video in festizzio's sig and that was my first exposure to it. I can't wait to give this a try.

Anyway, I don't think Pikachu is too overpowered now. But he has been buffed significantly, which makes me very happy. I've been having a lot more fun playing him in Brawl than I did in Melee actually. I hope we don't get a large influx of Pikachu players, but I'm not too worried. I don't think we will.

Just some useless things I thought I'd share:

You can short hop a fair and fast fall it before the hitbox comes out and it'll cancel with no lag, it won't hit them but it looks pretty cool imo. :) electricity everywhere ftw

And you know how if you're holding up on the control stick and press A or up on the c-stick you do an up tilt? Well if you hold up, press jump then A really fast you'll still do an up smash.

Also this isn't necessarily pikachu related but you can footstool jump people's shields, it's a really nice way to stop shield campers.
