If this is a hint to how the rest of the week is going to go, it’ll be a darn good week! Tuesday comes around, and we get details of yet another Final Smash, this time the electric rodent gets his shown.

The aptly named Volt Tackle is a move most pokemaniacs know of, being an electric type attack that causes damage to the user, and the move is only knowable by Pikachu, Raichu and Pichu. However, the move is nothing like it is in Brawl.

When Pikachu grabs the Smash Ball, he transforms into a “ball of light.” When transformed, Pikachu can fly around the screen, controlled by the player, ramming people at high speeds.

This doesn’t mean Pikachu’s totally unstopable! According to the Dojo, it’s actually a challenge to keep control of Pikachu during this time, and if what’s on the Dojo is a correct translation of Sakurai, it’s actually cancel-able, witha warning of what could happen if it’s canceled in mid-air. Watch where you’re flying guys!

In regards to how the move is controlled, there’s a few posibilities that come to mind. First is the most obvious, concidering the move looks like a larger version of Ness’ PK Thunder, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to think that it would be controlled in the same way. However, since this is Pikachu, and they’re talking about it being dificult to control, it could be controlled similar to Pikachu’s Up-B, with short, fast, and not easy to control bursts of speed.

<img src="http://www.ssb-center.com/images_articles/ssb/fiches_persos/nesshaut.jpg" alt="Could it be controlled like Ness' Up-B?" /> <img src="http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/characters/images/pikachu/pikachu_070619c.jpg" alt="Or like Pikachu's Up-B?" />

As always, post your comments and ideas both here, and <a href="http://smashboards.com">on our forums!</a>

EDIT: <a href="http://www.smashboards.com/member.php?u=54092">K Prime</a> on our forums has noticed a distinct similarity between Pikachu’s Final Smash and a move by a character in the game “Pulseman”, which was on the Sega Genisis, and made by Gamefreak, makers of Pokemon. If you want to see the move in action, K Prime found a youtube video with the move used, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOzshAZNSM8">which can be found here.</a>

MAYBE its controlled by aiming the wiimote, but becomes very sensative so if your whipping your hand around, then it cancels , pikachu will be flung off screen

I didnt read the part where he said u can cancel it. Are you sure it wasnt just the move running out of time? Pretty cool though.

At the end of the update, just before the last picture Sakurai says “If it gets cancelled in midair, something terrible will happen.”

K thanks. I think of a bull fight with this one. mario stands at the edge of the stage while pika charges up. Mario”toro toro” pika dashes at him mario quickly gets out of the way. Mario”ole” pika flys of the stage. Thats wats gonna happen eventually. :)

I’ll agree to the fact that it could be similarly controlled like Ness’ PK Thunder, but as far as speed is conserned, that’s unlikely.

First, take a look at how fast Pikachu’s Up-B is. The moment you blink, Pikachu would only zap once in a direction before zapping into another direction. That’s fast, isn’t it? Now, imagine that type of speed with his smash attack. Even slowing it down just a little would still risk yourself into SD from the sides. I believe the smash attack would have the same speed as PK Thunder (maybe slightly slower) so it could give the user more time to make curves.

I think the only time it would cancel itself out is if it’s short of time, it hits a solid part (wall or ground) or, someone hits him with a projectile attack (I say projectile cause you could cause yourself to get hurt if you try to spike him)

And, going into the cancelation, I believe that if it’s cancelled and you’re airborn, you won’t be able to do any attacks or any recoveries till you hit the ground (this rule goes for all UP B and several Foward B users)

again, this is IMO about it.

My thought on the cancellation thing was that the move would go on for a certain amount of time, and when that time is up Pikachu becomes completely helpless, keeping the momentum he had(?). So if you’re not careful about how much time you have left, you could end up cancelling the move when you’ve over the edge of the stage, or even when you’re zooming away from the stage and send yourself flying to your doom.

Maybe there is some blindingly obvious reason I’m wrong, but maybe GAMEFREAK is the “secret studio” who is mainly responsible for developing Brawl this time around. It could happen. :) I’m sure Nintendo would like it better if a studio close to them (or are they entirely Nintendo owned?) developed SSBB.

^^^Yeah, but don’t worry about it. Hal Laboratory normally does it, but this time Sakurai (the genius behind all 3 games) is working with another studio. There are probably some Hal people from the old games working on Brawl as well. Plus they have access to/are using all the development tools and code that Hal developed for Melee.

1. There is definitely an auto-cancel
2. Pikachu’s move has to be easy to control to make up for the danger of using the move.
3. The secret studio is NOT a division of McDonald’s

Well, maybe Volt Tackle is like Pk Thunder, only faster. That’s my general idea.
