Photoshop help

[Blood Falcon]

I am a noob at Photoshop but today when I tried to change my foreground color to red, it turns gray when i click 'new' and when i exit out of that picture, the color goes back to red. im not sure if this has anything to do with what im saying but I use Photoshop version 5.5

Hi, I was having trouble uploading my profile pic. I can't change it to jpeg. I HAVE flattened the image. How do I make it work?
Answer Found!!! It turned out that I needed to delete an extra "channel". Psd files have them, but Jpegs don't. Thanks!
