Paradigm and Erico Investigate Shulk's Optimal Control Scheme



Ever wondered what a character's best control scheme would be like? In Paradigm and Erico's latest video, they investigate what the optimal control scheme for Shulk truly is.

In the video, Paradigm explains the control schemes of top Shulk specialists Nicko, Darkwolf and TremendoDude. On the other hand, Erico goes over uncommon yet recommended control schemes. Throughout each option, interesting changes like Tap Jump-enabled make an appearance.


For an advanced character like Shulk, the techniques discovered over the course of competitive Super Smash Bros. for Wii U have been essential in keeping him viable with the rest of the roster. Community-sourced techniques like the Monado Purge have provided his fans with options they normally wouldn't know of.

Shulk's versatility is an amazing tool in the right hands. Developments in his meta-game have allowed dedicated specialists like TremendoDude to place high at large-scale events. With an increased input barrier with every technique learned, however, his control options should have the ability to compensate.

"We hope that this video inspires Shulk mains to reflect and think critically on their controller scheme choices," Paradigm says. "What might be convenient to them now could be holding back their own potential performance. A little extra effort now goes a long way!"

Despite the final result of this video, I absolutely swear by Special trigger. It feels so much more intuitive to me than Jump trigger. If I had a controller like the Hori Battle Pad with Digital triggers instead of Analog, though, Jump trigger would probably feel good. At least there, I would have the option to have both.

Great vid paradigm and erico! I personally fit with nickos , but I've made the change to jump trigger and it's working out great. Keep on labbing in the Shulk discord :p
 
The inside of a Shulk mains brain functions the exact same as someone trying to solve a really complicated calculus problem

We kept both analog shoulders unmodified in our "Optimal" layout with the idea of not using them at all due to having undeniably slower inputs than digital buttons. If there was a second Z button we would have 100% put Special on there-- it's why we feature it in our Pro Controller discussion. But there's really nothing you lose with the giving yourself that option with the shoulder input, it's just even more potent if chosen for use with a digital button!
 
On the statistic chart, what did they mean by "Flexibility"?
Those are actually profile cards I made for a bunch of Shulk mains (link is here)! I described flexibility as their capability to switch between different play styles in a match. In a sense, switching between passive and active play, as well as aggressive or defensive play.

All of the values in those cards were self-assigned, so it's based on their own perception of themselves. Only when things seemed really off did I suggest that maybe they should adjust the values.
