Out of Shield Options: What works when

Preface on Oos and Robin​

Seeing as how robin seems to have a rather wonky aerial move-set compared to other sword users (minus his Uair possibly) ive made a list of moves that work while under pressure. Since we dont much want to be close to people, and our grab range leaves much to be desired, I went ahead and tested Fair, Nair, Bair, and Uair as OoS options and written down what connects and what will leave you being punished while just outside of grab range

Back Air​

As a quick note, bair oos is akward, you need to be at a specific range for it to connect on some characters. If it is easy to bair them oos ill mark it with robin face. If you are being pressured from behind and want to throw out a bair, mess around with the spacing since many times it wont hit at all

*unless indicated, bair will NOT hit if the opponent is too close to you. These were all tested right outside of grab range, meaning that if you are too close to them the Bair will miss unless specified. In these cases it would be better to Usmash OoS or simply roll or jump away since you are now in a bad position.

Up Air​

Uair OoS is also another weird one. It can hit on several characters, but depending on their height it can be difficult to get it to land, and many times when you are that close to them you could probably fair and be safer. Uair has more knockback though so it could be used as a supplement for an Usmash OoS since it has better range.

* if you want a better chance of hitting with Uair OoS DI towards them after you jump and input Uair

Up Smash​

It should also be noted that Usmash OoS is another option that can work, but from what I tested every single time you could Usmash OoS you USUALLY could grab, so Usmash OoS should be reserved for killing or if the enemy is behind you and you want a safer option to punish their moves. Usmash OoS has roughly the same hitbox as a shield grab, so if you get pushed too far out of grab range you will likely whiff the Usmash. Sometimes grabbing will even outrange Usmash OoS, so decide what option you want to go for.

Neutral Air​

Do not use Nair OoS if they are behind you because its back hitbox is not as large as the front one. If you are really close to your opponet and Bair will not connect only then should you Nair

Nosferatu​

Nosferatu is also another OoS option if you jump cancel it. Nosferatu also goes through shields so if they pressure your shield and then they try to predict your attack by shielding, you can Nos through their shield. Nosferatu also has better range than your grab and has some startup time so it could even punish spot dodges.


*These moves are all done with a levin sword except for Nair oos

The long and the short of this is really that people who are taller than robin we can do well against OoS, and people who are shorter give us issues. Keep that in mind and punishing shouldn't be too bad, even though doing levin smash aerials OoS on these controls can be rather irritating at times.

Keep in mind again that there are only a few people who will be hit at close range by Bair OoS. Mess around with the range, since many times Bair will kill but since it arcs downward you want to make sure you are just out of grab range in order to make the Bair connect, or else itll whiff.

Yea for greninja there are really only two OoS options, those being Usmash OoS and Nosferatu OoS. Both arent particularly safe and Usmash requires you being fairly close due to its lackluster vertical range, so rolling away, jumping oos, or dropping shield and running away are safer in that case. We also have a really fast jab (frame 4) so droping shield and jabbing is also not a bad option, plus it has nice range.
