online vs console: how do you adapt?

Hey guys, I've been pondering this for a while and I really got to thinking after I read Alancitu's comment:
I felt the controller much softer than the normal, apart from the delay. So playing online it's completely different,I think it's much better playing on console face to face.
I've played online for years now and I've found that I play at my best in a server match when both I and my opponent have good connections (and I don't mean the connection settings, I mean a smooth, lag/spike free game). When p2p came out I thought it was an awesome idea (still do) but when I played it I had lots of trouble timing things like z-cancels and even rolling out of my shield. I know the title says "console" but I'd really like to focus on p2p since I never play console and they are close enough for this subject. I'd like to hear how any of you adapt with switching from server play to p2p; be it changing controller settings or any little trick like "press the buttons faster/slower" haha. I have no idea what the deadzone and all of that controller stuff means so that very well could be my problem. Also I was wondering how you all think the condition of your controller can effect your play (really old worn in controller vs relatively new). It's really sad that I've grown to need server delay. I figured p2p would be easier for me but, nope, lol. Anyway, your thoughts, please :bee:

Seriously, it's the only good information you could possibly get. If you don't play console and your wanting to play p2p from a server, then there nothing to do but to get used to it.

Im also a server/p2p cool guy. I play console whenever I visit my cousins house, which isnt often because that requires effort

I can handle anything from 2-8 frames of delay. It's really not as hard to get used to as people say(lol delay****).
Sometimes it feels harder going from 8 to 2 frames then 2 to 8.
Honestly though its all just timing(pressing buttons faster/later then usual etc.). Once you get used to the lowest/highest delay you can pretty much get used to anything in between .

Isn't deadzone the joystick sensitivity ? That is what changes for me whenever I change it. Yet I keep seeing people say its for button input.

The only character I play better on console than online is Yoshi. Console just feels awkward to me because I've never had anyone to play with. I guess I'm lucky my main is yoshi though.

I've just played online twice and that was what I felt but Idk. I'm not saying that playing online is bad,it's just that I haven't gotten used to it yet. I heard you have a good yoshi =) . My friend told me that he played you online months ago and your yoshi is amazing.

thanks for the comments. Yeah, as far as "getting used to it" goes thats what I've been doing so far, and it works well enough. It takes a few matches to switch to p2p before I feel comfortable, but I never feel in my element like I do when I'm playing on server, and it bugs me. I'm not really looking for an epiphany that will fix everything, I'm more interested in how you guys feel things like switching to p2p, control settings, and old/new controllers affect your play. A lot of people commented on Alancitu's matches vs Keshiki how they didn't think Keshiki was playing his best; and Alancitu responded that Keshiki hadn't brought his own controller...I didn't know it could make that big of a difference so it made me curious.

online playing = easier playing so you have to play faster, better and do bigger combos than playing in console if you want to get at top level

Online smash is just for fun. Its a basic skill-o-meter I guess but until you face someone on console you arent exactly really playing true smash with them.

Console is where its at.

2nd post by BHLMRO was the best advice. Get used to it.

Haha, get used to it, okay i get it. That's what I planned on doing anyways. So let me pose one of my questions a different way. Sticking strictly to console, how do you think different controllers affect high level game play?

Oh man online, after only 2 days, is starting to take its toll on me. I played a match earlier today with someone (SD, I think the name was?) He was obviously better than me, but I enjoyed the match.

Then just now I played someone else, forget the name. Anyway the guy blatantly sucked, was slow/predictable. But I had such heavier lag with him that I actually lost a few matches. Took too many risks I guess, with the lag and still getting used to the difference in joystick use. I don't like to make excuses, but that pissed me off. Mainly because now I see that I will have to deal with massive lag pretty much all the time until I get P2P set up and actually FIND people who want to P2P.

The main thing that's also taking its toll is the shabby connections, frequent desyncs, often glitches with item select/all chars unlocked. Graphics missing because P64K is lame like that (Mupen ftw). Lots of hassle for a laggy battle.

BUT I STILL PLAY!! WHY!??

wut?

learn to use jabo's D3D8 plugin in kaillera

rename it as Jabo_Direct3D7.dll and there you have

p2p always will be better than playing in any server, but ppl must know that it wont be perfect.

things like downloading, having the messenger/aol open and so make game laggy

Maybe he's talking about the keyboarders with hax DI.
thats an advantage when using kb, but you miss some things like instant tilts and directions for fox's / pika's up b

but, i think that additional DI worth those loses

I never played on console competitively, so i played online for about 2 years and i never had any problems with it
but after getting console it's SO much nicer, and im so much better
I never SD'd once after playing all night with Jam and my combos never ****ed up cause of delay or anything
I don't think i'll be online half as much now that i have console

Mupen is the closest to console, but it's still farr farrrr off

??????????????????????????????
Dont you agree that online playing is in general easier to play and to do anything than playing in console? so to be a top level player you have to do everything better than you can do on console.

YAY finally played some fun P2P. On P64k. Still a little lag, but much more enjoyable. Faced some guy named "sm". He has a very good Yoshi. There were one or two close matches, but he won'em all as far as I remember. Haha, he stayed 100% as yoshi while I constantly switched up characters between Link, Fox, Falcon, Pika, Ness, Jiggly, & Mario.

I don't know, sticking to one character is less interesting for me. I like knowing the nuances of all of them... but maybe each individual char suffers as a result because I haven't focused on just one for long enough to become really good with him.

Faith in online playing RESTORED, for the time being...

not when you have a good input plugin
u mean N-Rage's plugin?

well, its true, you can configure the modifiers to switch between lets say, 50% and 100% of analog's range

but it's all about getting used to it.

i'm used to jabo's and i'm fine for now.
