My best friend (my only friend..... I'm homeschooled.....;_; )used to be the BIGGEST SCRUB ever. All he did was complain that I spammed too much (I was 99 times better than him)and that sort of stuff. And he got on me because I used MK (......and he mains MetaKnight now lololololol) in a party of his and that I was playing REALLY gay and such (I think I used 4 tornado's in one hour to be honest).
Now this person got REALLLLLLLY mad at me winning all the time, and one day he came over to my house and said he has going to turn pro, and he decided to main MK and I was ROFLing for real. I knew he couldn't even come CLOSE to me.
And he was doing AMAZING. He was beating me every 3-4 times and coming up with strategies that were completely unpredictable. I know he's deticated, and he watches lots of matches of MKs and such, but there are two problems:
1. I'm wondering if that "scrub" nature will come back to haunt him and prevent him from doing cheap things.
2. He plays with complete scrubs. Seriously, the kids at his school don't know ANYTHING about Brawl, and they might convince him to stop playing "to win".

If he was a complete scrub then, can he "play to win" anymore? Is it worthless for him to enter tournaments?

TL;DR My friend was once a scrub and he's really working to get good but I'm worried about his scrubiness coming back and if he should even TRY tournaments

Honestly, it looks like the competitive spark in him was struck.

I wish my friend was like that, rather then "I quit". :/

Just don't rush him into the competitive scene. Just be competitive with him a bit, and if he gets to bloated (because of those scrubs at school), then try to get him to go to a tournament with you. This will show him the real competitive side and that there is a large difference between actual players and people at school who play for fun. (Note that competitive playing can obviously be fun =p)

Who knows?

I mean, I was a complete scrub once. I guess I still am, I don't know. What I do know is that there's a pro switch in everyone, and if it flicks on, you can do very well (of course you need dedication, some tech skill, and tons of play time).

I think you get my point.

I was a scrub back before I joined this forum... and that was only... five months ago? Now I look back on replays of me and my brother playing (me as Ike) and I wonder what possessed us to save the replays. I rolled and rolled and rolled, spammed smash attacks, used counter and failed, used Quick Draw to recover more often than Aether... basically I was the ideal scrubby Ike player.

Now, just five months later, I know the metagame, I know my match-ups, I know how to read my opponent (to an extent) and how to vary my own game so I can't be read as easily. It doesn't take long if you set your mind to it and seriously try your hardest to improve.

Ok, I'll try that, thanks.

No but I mean he was a TOTAL scrub, not just "bad". Everyone starts out "bad", but he was one of the people that complained about everything like spamming, cheap moves ect.

No. Waiting and dodging until you are properly spaced underneath the ledge of the stage is almost always better.

Quick Draw has it's times, but it's not often.
Though scrubs use it like it's the only recovery. They (from the ones I've faced) usually suicide cause they don't realize it has no horizontal range.

Weeeeeell... it has no horizontal range uncharged. If you start using it early enough and were high enough to begin with, it's sometimes your only recovery option because you may be too far away to get back and Aether.

However, it has many more downsides than Aether, including the fact that it's very easy to see coming and you can gimp it by simply jumping out in front of it away from the stage so it hits you... Ike then falls slowly to his doom. Quickdraw shouldn't even be used on-stage as an approach. It has horrendous ending lag, so bad in fact that 90% of the cast can punish him even if they're hit by it at low percents.

Anyways, this isn't a thread about Ike's recovery options.

tl;dr... never use QD.
