Okay, Which Fire Emblem Character would YOU think would be better?

There's been backlash to the Byleth character. More than usual, I mean. I've been part of it. But Byleth doesn't seem like a bad idea on paper. Byleth's problem is that he's a good-sounding idea that follows a bunch of similar good-sounding ideas, making this good idea not as special. Each of the Fire Emblem characters all have this problem disguised as a solution- obviously, you would want the main character to be the star, right? Problem is, while main characters in many of Nintendo's other games are interesting and unique (Smash 64 was made up entirely of them), main characters in Fire Emblem are often simple stand-ins for the player, surrounded by a cast of much more interesting ones. Including these heroes (they're called "lords" in the games) isn't a bad idea on its own. It's more about who isn't getting in instead of them- just about any support character would have made a better choice. Take the Animal Crossing characters for example- the first AC character was a villager- the type you'd play as in the game. This was boring. They could have picked any one of the other characters made by the professional developers- and they did! Isabelle was a huge improvement character-wise. The Smash Team is ABSOLUTELY capable of changing things for the better and making people excited for more FE characters.

Including Marth, the main character of the first game and a good player character in general, was fine. But what's it followed up with? Roy, the main character from Sword of Seals. Ike, the main character from Path of Radiance. Lyn was an assist trophy in Brawl. Chrom and Corrin have become part of Smash as well. And now Byleth. I imagine there would be little to no complaints if the choices weren't so SAFE. I mean, you could have had Marth, but then had a Pegasus Knight from Sword of Seals, an Archer from Path of Radiance, an axe-weilder from Blazing Sword, two waifus from Awakening and Fates, and anyone but the Byleth from Three Houses. If the Fire Emblem character structure looked more like that, we would be eagerly anticipating FE instead of dreading it. It's not that Smash Fans hate FE. If anything, there should be plenty of overlap between fanbases of games with large casts. There isn't though, because an FE character will almost always be the blandest, safest choice possible. Who is the next FE character going to be? Probably the hero of the current game they want to promote. And that's what the next 3 FE characters will probably be as well. It's not that we like all other Nintendo games but have a sore spot for FE- we just don't like how FE is being treated. We know it's capable of being better represented.

So let's do it now. Which character would you like to see? I have a suggestion. How about a VILLAIN?

How about the final boss of the first game? He could turn into a dragon on occasion and otherwise just be insanely durable. He could be an event boss or something.

I'd go with Alvis. In the story, he's detestable. In the game, he's difficult. And he'd be very unique among FE characters. Or what about Beldo? He could be a versatile magic user that tactically strikes people.

Are Alvis too far back for you? How about Vaida? She could fly around on a Wyvern and chuck spears at people. Or what about Takumi? or Garon?

Are villains not your thing? What about arena enemies? What about shopkeeps? You could make a shopkeep SO INTERESTING! I'd play as one of those. What about one of those peasant children you rescue that secretly have fighting superpowers up their sleeve? The possibilities are numerous!

Instead of focusing on problems, let's focus on solutions. One of my solutions would be to give Sakurai his own separate series that he can do whatever he wants with and let someone else have Smash. He needs the break.

It can go one of two ways for me:

-For the base game, I’d (purposely)* replace :ultchrom: with Celica, a holy magic user with a sword as opposed to :ultrobin:‘s dark magic.
-For the DLC, I’d replace Byleth with Claude, a fighter completely reliant on his bow, as opposed to Byleth being spoiled with Failnaught being one of his weapons.

*Here’s the context for my bad joke.

Good suggestion so far. I'm not against FE characters, just uninteresting ones. More variety would be preferable.

Lyn is extremely victimize and her AT role no longer justify it. One of the most passed over characters in the history of Smash speculation. Unique, mascot of its western debut and decently popular.
