"The Great Gonzales" was the title given to him by Grubba, the wrestling manager, when he enlisted as a fighter in the Glitz Pit, during the events of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

I love that they gave the Koopalings titles as well (though I guess they sort of had to).
The "Great Gonzales" thing is way too obscure of a reference. People need to get over that one; I'm personally glad they didn't use it.

Since this title only really works as a pun in English, I'm guessing Sakurai had nothing at all to do with it, and this was the work of the localization team. The title is probably something completely different in the Japanese version.

I'm beginning to question if Wario is becoming a reference to a comedian or actor who slowly and desperately resorts to crappy - pun intended - antics to relive his glory days.

I wished Falco's alias was something like the Flying Bread Maniac or the Grounded Pilot.

Ike's alias is really squished looking. I bet if it was "The Legendary Radiant Hero of the Blue Flames" it'd be unreadable. Wait a minute... Why wasn't it "The Hero of the Blue Flames" instead of "The Radiant Hero of Legends"?

Thanks for the genius input. I had no idea Mario and Paper Mario were different. Honestly, it's more of a joke than anything. Obviously, the reference would be too obscure as well as misrepresentative of the series. That doesn't stop it from being a cool nod to the Paper Mario fanbase however.

The lack of the latter is indeed a disappointment but the former will always refer to "Blue" of Bomberman 64 fame for me.
