I don't know if this is an old or insignificant discovery but... when using Samus' forward smash you could actually tilt it in 3 different directions. You can't do this with a C-stick, it requires you to hold the A button and forward. After Samus charges up her forward smash she will just be about to release it. At this very moment there are 3 things you could do.

#1 Don't do anything
If you do nothing, Samus will do her ordinary smash. This is just Samus trusting her arm directly forward in a horizontal form. The max damage 18%, this attack has great knock back

#2 Move your control stick up
If you start by smashing your control stick forward and while she charges and starts to hit you change and start holding the control stick up, Samus will follow. This meaning Samus will hit with her arm cannon pointing diagonally up. This attack could hit characters who are jumping that method #1 and #2 can not. Also this attack has the greatest knock back among her forward smashes. The max damage 19%

#3 Move your control stick down
The basic formula of doing this attack is the same as #2 but you move the control stick down. In this attack Samus will aim her attack diagonally down. This attack can NOT be used as a metor when the character is off stage and trying to come back. Although, this attack, unlike the others. could be used to reach the opponent when he is trying to reach the edge while off stage. This attack could possibly reach some characters who are ducking. The knock back of this attack is the weakest of the 3. The max damage 16%

These moves will not cause much off a different result if both players are neutral on the ground because all of these attacks could hit any character, from Olimar to Bowser.

This also works with her tilts. I need to incorporate it into my play a bit more. What I'm wondering is whether the horizontal range changes at all when you angle her fsmash.

You can do this with cstick. Press cstick to forward smash and press up or down on control stick to change the direction (up or down). You can decide last minute. Say you're charging fsmash and someone starts to duck because they know samus' fsmash has a garbage hitbox, you can angle it down while your charging.

eg, press cstick and hold Z to charge. Before releasing hold up or down to change the direction you want it to go.

edit: Horizontal range gets worse if you angle your fsmash. It's still a very precise move. It's also very easy to miss while angling since it doesn't really adjust the size of the hit box vertically but moreso moves it.

edit2: My bad you were talking about making the decision during the charge already. You should try it with cstick though, just holding a direction on control stick and pressing cstick to get angled smashes.

Yeah, I was pretty sure I wasn't the FIRST to discover this I wanted to know the significance of it. Also, yeah I guess you can do it with C-stick, my c-stick is sorta broken so i didn't try to use it much. I used it in a couple of my matches and it did help my game a bit, especially because fsmash is her strongest move. I think tilting fsmash is most useful during edge hogging periods.

It is her strongest move... Its superior to moves such as bair, charge shot, usmash, and that one crouching attack. I think your thinking that I said it was her best move, when I say strongest I mean the attack with the most knock back.

actually the bair has more knockback than the fsmash is more difficult to hit, the bair is also very difficult to land, but you can hit with it in a middle of a combo, so its more useful.

as far as edgeguarding from the stages goes I've found her u-tilt works better for me, seems like it has better range and arcs as well.

fsmash has terrible range. You basically have to be on top of your friend to hit em. Like doomgaze said, you'll only get your opponents with it off of a mistake.

Most of my fsmashes are totally by accident. By far the majority of them miss, occasionally though I'll land one randomly for a KO or just to send them flying. I don't fsmash on purpose all that much.

I utilt a lot though.
