Norton/Windows ME known issues?

Hey guys,

Friends computer has gone on the blink since they installed Norton ANti-Virus on it.

Basically they re getting a stream of error messages from the system when they start it up like Kernell.dll32 not present and the like and some Pop-up about Win-Fixer2005. Unfortunatley I don't have the exact details though at the moment.

On top of that the system is running very slowly, it's an old desktop PC so I guess it may be that the pocessor simply isn't fast enough to handle Norton, I notice some slow down from it on my nice shiny new PC.

I was wondering if anyone has encountered or heard of anything that may explain why this is happenign? I was thinking that if System Restore is present in ME then I may be able to do that to get rid of some of the stuff they have on their liker Norton and Win-Fixer and maybe be able to get the thing to stop crashing often enough that i can find out what else is wrong. Any thoughts or suggetions?
:laugh::(:(

Tru all of dat.

Windows ME is worse than Vista, even. But not as bad as the Bob OS from Microsoft.

But XP is the one you should use, if you absolutely refuse to try out

LINUX

I'm worse than Jehovah's Witnesses with all my OS evangelism here...

Also, sorry you got banned, Rick1. I put in a word for you in forum disputes. We'll see if we can fix that.

EDIT: Unless if you were a spambot, which I think is more likely, and in which case I am talking to no one right now and am making a fool of myself.

I'd suggest going Linux...

...but since you're not going to do that, I'll tell you my opinion: Norton is absolute garbage. It's a ****ty ****TY piece of software that does little to protect and a lot to slow down your computer. Uninstall it and pick up AVG. Hell, if you feel so inclined to pay for something, pay for AVG. Just get rid of Norton.

And why was he banned? Didn't seem like a spambot...gah. I guess I'm just getting slow off the gun.

Yea, Windows ME is likely the problem. Nobody uses it.

I just got a dual-boot going with 64-Bit Vista and Ubuntu 7.10 (32 bit).

It's not a bad combination.

Also, Norton Antivirus totally sucks. It's arguably the worst computer security program you ever payed more than $0 for. And it's much worse than even free AVG.

This is just a warning to anyone here who is customizing their Dell or something: Don't get Norton if you can avoid it. Even if it costs $0, opt out, and install AVG, free edition, or a similar program.

Either that, or USE LINUX

Jammer's right: avoid Norton as if it's the ****in' plague.
Actually, Sensai's right. He's the one who said it first. Sorry I didn't acknowledge you, Sensai.

And Rick1 isn't temp banned, I think. He is a spambot (I talked a bit about this in Forum Disputes). If you Google up his posts, you'll see that they're posted on other forums.

A spambot that just tries to fit in. Maybe it's someone's science experiment?

A failed science experiment, apparently.

And you're right, I was right....FIRST. Who knew?

That's enough spamming in this thread, me thinks.

Not a bad idea for a spam-bot: make some posts that look legit so you're likely to last a little while longer before being banned.

Hat's off to that.

Yes, but what's the point of the spambot? He never advertised anything.

It's not like I'm going to buy Windows ME or Norton Antivirus now.

Maybe it's an anti-Windows spambot? That's my kind of spambot, I guess.

Curious, tell me something here Alt but isn't isn't there a security or programming glitch in Vista that in which prevents (ANY) user from booting to another O.S.? Unless you of course installed Unbutu first then Vista? ....How did you manage this, my Partition Magic 8 doesn't seemt to work with V.

There's some trick to it, SmashChamp, but if you just do a normal install of Ubuntu from the Live CD, it should work fine.

Vista has a partition application built in. You don't need to use partition magic. I happen to have a 400GB SATA drive, so I just sectioned off 80GB for Ubuntu, threw in a boot cd I burned and it all went fine. I never had any troubles at all.

Ubuntu: It just works.

flaco: you should get SP3. Apparently, it's incredible. Somethin' like a 10% increase in performance...

@ SmashChamp: What are you having problems with? Just ask a question and we, the Ubuntu sub community of the Smash boards, would be willing to help.

Say whaaat?? "What you talking about Willis"?

Guys why didn't you make a brand new "The Official Operative System" thread?

Otherwise, the question here had been answered.
No sage your wrong it hasn't been answered 100% only 15% so far...when I had an Acer Laptop came pre-installed with Vista (beginning of 07) found out couldn't play battlefield2 or CounterStrike, was that bad---to bad infact tried to partition my harddrive with one, XPSP2 installed (for gaming purposes), Vista on the other. ...So far something ****ty went wrong during the whole process in Vista basic; However is rather different in Vista Ultimate.

@Sensei: You'd have to walk me through this by providing a ton of info on this Unbutu; Learned alot after trial and error with Vista. Also there is a no such thing for vista to allow partitioning, especially older O.S.es (regardless); Ah, quite frankly must install older programs first, THEN Vista afterwards. But once again depending on the quality of the [company brand] Motherboard; nuff-said!

rebuttle?
