I went to play with my group today and I got spanked moreso than usual because lolimbad.
I couldn't put my finger on it until after a few games when I noticed my tech skill was basically nonexistent. I couldn't do things I could normally do on my TV (like shield dropping or wd oos) and even basic things were notably off and more difficult. Like simply dropping through a platform then doing a very quick aerial. Instead I'd just crouch then fsmash standing on the platform still.
I normally play on a CRT. The tv we use is also a CRT.

I looked at the tech guide but I'm not sure what the problem is because it is not mental. As soon as I left I went back to my TV and everything was fine/normal.
Is it because I practice melee on wii (with the deflicker on in the display options) and the other TV runs on a cube?

I'm not sure but I'd like to fix this because all my practice is going to waste (I already switched from a laggy TV to a CRT a few months ago). I would hate to go to a tourney then lose to the television.

I'm pretty sure the whole 50 hertz issue is exclusive to non-North American countries. How do you know the TV is a CRT? Just because it's big doesn't mean it is. Also, does the picture quality look REALLY sharp? I have played on a TV that I would have sworn up and down was a CRT from the looks of it, but as soon as we booted up the game, it looked like it was in HD and I felt a lot of lag.

Do you often play with other people? There's a good chance you were just thrown off by having to play against people and not CPUs. When I'm practicing against robots in my room at three in the morning, I'm the most technical player in the world. Then I go to a tournament and mess up ledgedashes.

Yes I play with people about 2-3 days a week and practice by myself 1-2 days a week. I don't have these problems when I play in my room with or without people.

Yeah mine is a 60. And I am sure my TV is a CRT. You can look into the vents and see the conical mechanicism in the back.
I currently can't prove the other one is a CRT but I assume it is because it has that look to it. It's definitely an old TV at least.

(see: wiki for pictures if anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathode_ray_tube)

So this has nothing to do with the deflicker in the melee settings and the Wii/Cube?
I guess I narrowed it down to there being something wrong with the TV my group uses.

I was referring to the TV your group uses. If you can get a brand name and model number or something and look it up, I'm sure you could figure out really quickly if it's a legitimate CRT. Even if it is, it's worth mentioning that some CRTs lag for one reason or another. I don't know the details of why, but it's definitely not unheard of.

I don't think deflicker ever affects input lag or anything. If you're worried that is the case, you could simply turn the deflicker on and off on their TV to see if either feels different, but I doubt it will.

We've recently discovered the lag thing with CRTs as well... even documented it :D
We had one of those 1000 frames per seconds slow-mo cameras around (don't ask why anybody would have those things... we just know people who don't need a real reason to acquire stupid gadgets like that ;) ) and just couldn't resist holding it to the TV in question with a controller in front of it. Actually we only used a 420 frames per second setting, because at 1000 fps the cathode ray movement was visible too clearly making it super hard to actually tell what was going on.

Well, and it was super obvious that after the b button had been pressed (we had the controller lying on a somewhat soft surface... So you'd see how the b button first sinks in and after it hits the point where it won't go further in, the whole controller goes down a little more :D) that the TV picture was redrawn 3 or 4 times before a shine would come out (:
Might do some more tests with different TVs and then upload something about conclusive findings.

Also: Input lag doesn't throw off my multishines at all... It's not like I had to be looking at a TV to hit y and b with the correct timing :D

Ha I really knew it. I feel like my TV runs super fast. I can feel the lag on the other TV but after playing on it for multiple days I can warm up to it pretty quickly now
