Ok, I'm a casual player. I don't play competitively, and I don't have any friends to come around and play with me.

So, is there any point in my getting this game?

I liked Melee and adored Brawl, but the streams seem to indicate that this one is going to be a bit lacking when it comes to solo viability.

The character unlocks are all done within eight hours. So are the AT unlocks. Pokéball Pokémon and music likely aren't far behind.

The challenges also seem really, really easy. I loved working towards all the various challenges in Brawl, but there are far fewer in this version, and most of the streamers have already unlocked something like half of them.

Do you think this game is going to have any replay value or reasonable length to the lifespan outside of the competitive groups? Or will those of us playing on our own going to exhaust all the content in a day and then never play again?

It has been officially confirmed that the Wii U version will have more difficult unlocks, so maybe you should just wait for that one.

Can I just say I adore your avatar?

And you can play online "for fun" if you don't have nearby friends with smash. Unless you dkmt like online. Then maybe you should wait for the Wii U version. I'm not though.

I think the 3DS version is a good foretaste for Smash 4, but the Wii U version will be the real feast. However, I've been playing Brawl for 6 years and it still hasn't gotten old, even without people to play with. I don't see why this one would be any different.

I'd say it's worth it (if Smash Run is a third as fun as Kirby Air Ride it would sell the game for me, single player), but that's ultimately up to you. At the very least, get whichever of the two versions you think offers more.

To me this is how I see it

This is for you if
- you want to play Smash 4 a month or two early
- you want to play Smash 4 on the go
- you don't own a Wii U

For me I'm going to be getting it because well I want to play Smash 4 immediately, and it will be nice to play on the go, and it will serve as a great training device for when Im waiting to play the Wii U version.

I had forgotten Smash Run, and the online connectivity. Too used to not being able to play with others unless local. Smash Run does look to be fun. But I'll miss Subspace Emissary, and the more difficult (and greater number) of Challenges that Brawl had.

Hey there!

Let me start off by repeating almost exactly of what you said!
I'm not a competitive player either unfortunately, due to School and a large amount of other game series that I enjoy (Persona, Shin Megami tensei, Ace Attorney, Fire Emblem) I'm unable to really put as much time into Smash as others are.
The thing is, this game seems to be more of a "Personal" Smash. You see, Soccerguy really put work into getting people to enjoy this iteration together (despite everyone up in arms about 2BIGLEY). He wants people to be able to meet up at a cafe, library, game store, or something and enjoy Smash Run casually or maybe a few simple matches with an easy to unlock cast with a limited amount of options (but just enough)

Smash 4 Wii U seems to be the more competitive one with the larger amount of content. It's likely to have WAYYY more songs than just 2 per stage and I can almost assure you there'll be more Trophies and other unlockables than in Smash 4 3DS. He's also stated they're going to be harder to get. Definitely not characters, but probably more stages and collectibles for simple players.

Since I still go to School and have a single person that I talk to, It'd be nice to take my 3DS and enjoy some casual smashes or Smash Run with him up close in-between or during classes. Other than that, I don't really see a "MAJOR" purpose in owning the 3DS for replayability or competitive play.

Happy Smashin'!

There's very close to 400 unlockable moves. Almost 500 different item variations. 686 trophies. Also around 6 stages, 13 characters and a low number of ATs. Also who knows just how many Mii hats and Mii clothes are in the game, it's probably a huge amount.

All in all, there's about 2000 unlockables.

I understand that you're wary of not having many "important" unlockables like many characters. But it's actually better to leave the big bulk of unlockables to vanity items like trophies and hats/clothes.

Building your perfect fighter (moves + items) will take you 800-900 unlockables so there's something that will take huge amount of time. Plus defeating the game on 9.0 doesn't seem like a very easy task.

I get there's not many challenges in the game aside from 9.0 intensity but Sakurai did say he was going to make the 3DS version "easy".

This game might have less "important" solo content than Brawl did, but it has a lot more vanity and "self goals" to complete.

Actually, I'm fine with any type of unlockable, as long as I had something to shoot for. I had no idea there were so many things to unlock.

Although I thought the Smash Run customization items were more randomly generated, ever changing things (similar to items in Kid Icarus: Uprising), rather than full unlockables that were distinct and preset.

I think they are randomly generated. But not exactly.

The game only has 5 stats. Jump, Speed, Defense, Attack and Smash/Special. There is are items for every stat combination plus stat reduction combination. Things like + Attack/-Defense is an item, but +Attack/-Speed is another or even +Attack/+Speed/-Defense/-Jump. Basically when you get down to it there's so many of possibilities of stat combinations and that's without taking into account the fact that the actual numbers are randomly generated.

The items was more of a tentative number more than an actual digit. Moves though are an actual digit (8 per character for 47 characters because Miis and Palutena already have them all unlocked). 368 custom moves to unlock. At least 100 different item combinations, each with varying scales (with just 5 variation of 1 item that's 500 items like I said before). Plus the characters, stages, ATs and Mii hats and Clothes.

It's going to take a little while to unlock everything quite honestly. But not that long. As a single classic can give you 6+ trophies, 3+ equipment and 2+ custom moves in the same run.

I don't see smash bros as competitive at all, it will always be just a fun casual game for me. I'm still buying it, even if I might not have a single friend to play with, as non of them own a 3DS or care enough to buy smash bros.

Just because you can't get into jt competitvly doesn't mean others can't m8.

And let's hope the online is decent this time around so me and you both don't have to worry about the friend thing. Lol
